       21 May 2019 - Interviews
By: Jack Date: May 21, 2019, 4:57 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I'm going to risk repeating myself here, so forgive me if you've
       already heard this.
I try to hire a lot of college and high school students. That
means, when the school year ends or begins, I have quite a bit
of change over. While some kids go home (or to school), then
come back to work for me again, I end up having to hire new
people several times a year. It would be kind of nice not to do
that, but I like to give kids experience ---- outside the other
       reasons you can imagine.
A lot of times, nothing happens in regards to this forum,
outside of getting to talk to nice, young boys/men, with whom I
share interests. Sometimes I do manage to work spanking (or
even just discipline) into the conversation but usually that
doesn't happen until I've known the person for a while.
In this case, there were no spanking conversations, but I have
had a couple of good hires.
One of my best ones is a kid who's just finishing his sophomore
year in high school. His name is Mike, he's 16, pretty average,
but he's a huge anime/manga fan, which is something I've been
needing for a while. Though you don't have to have knowledge of
specific fandoms, haivng experts in the stores certainly helps.
Plus, Mike isn't looking for a summer job. This is his first
job, and he's hoping to keep it throughout high school.
I've also hired a couple of young ladies recently. While I'm
not as excited about those, it's always good to keep some girls
working in the store, for those female customers we get.
I did hire a new kid who's still in high school. I've hired so
many know I'm a bit confused, but I think his name is Jay and
he's 17. He's been buying gaming cards from my stores since he
was about six, and he does role playing as well, so he's going
       to be a good fit.
I think I have enough hires for the summer now. I was down in
the campus store this afternoon, working on a display, while
awaiting an interview after school. Two boys walked in - one
was high school, and the other was... 6th or 7th grade? About
12 or 13. The two of them were arguing, and the older boy was
trying to keep things quiet. I did hear the older boy say 'it
was your fault',. and the younger boy whined a bit, which led to
the older boy saying something like 'do you want me to tell Dad
you nearly made me late for my job interview?'
Apparently he didn't, and he meekly trekked over to our waiting
area and quietly took a seat.
The young man - Grant - came to the desk and asked for me, but
I'd already been putting things away. He apologized. He had
been supposed to drop his little brother at home before coming
here, but his little brother hadn't been waiting where he was
supposed to. Grant is interesting, because he doesn't follow
the traditional fandoms that end up working for me (comics or
anime, games, or, to a lesser extent, Star Wars, Star Trek, or
Dr. Who). Of course, the last 20 years have seen an explosion
of 'fandoms' (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings,
Walking Dead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Grant is what I would
call a 'literary geek'. He apparently loves reading, but what
he really loves are toys and collectibles related to
novels/series. He does TV as well, but definitely not as
strongly. For one thing, he's a huge Sherlock Holmes fan.
So yeah, I hired Grant. He's a bit of a square peg, but he
seems like a nice kid, and I know I want to talk to him. I
couldn't get him around to talking about Dad and little brother,
but he is going to be joining a lot of our new hires Saturday
for a BBQ, and I hope to tempt him into return visits with a
peak at my library (oh, and he knows Leif from school).

       Had a great day today.
I think I mentioned elsewhere that I tried to have all my new
hires and many of my longer term employees over today in a 'get
to know you' mixer. We were poolside, and had the grill going,
and I think it was a really good day.
Today was clear to party cloudy, and the high was about 90F/33C,
       with a mild breeze.
While most of whom I hired were high school or college students,
there were two adults joining us - both teachers from BCA, and
also both young adults. One was a lady I'm almost sure I've not
mentioned before. The other was Bobby Witte (which I've always
heard pronounced as 'wit E' but which he pronounces as wight -
like white with no 'h'). I haven't talked about him much
before, but if it sounds familiar, you're probably thinking
       about this post -

First of all, I should say that many board shorts (and other
type of men/boy's shorts) are no longer hitting or even passing
the knees. However, while most of them seem to give an inch or
two of clearance, several of our guests today (along with
several of my boys, actually) were wearing shorts that only hit
about mid thigh. Now, that's nothing compared to the shorts we
wore when I was growing up (with inseams of maybe two or three
inches or even less), but these still exposed a lot more than
has been common for many years now, and they looked good.
Bobby Witte was one of the ones wearing those shorts (a green
and purple tie die on white that went great with his red hair
and slightly flushed complexion). The other boy who was wearing
shorter trunks was Mike, whom I think has a Hispanic background.
He was wearing trunks with a multi-shade brown patter, with
black flip flops and a black shirt, and it looked awesome on
       him.
Not that the other boys looked bad. Grant's shorts were nearly
knee length, but it looked like he hadn't started growing leg
hair yet, so I wonder if he's a late bloomer or if he's just
       going to be smooth.
Of course, I also hit the buttons I wanted to hit. I was able
to talk quite a bit with Chance, and he seems to be settling in
well. He gets along with my college kids that he met. He did
mention that this is the first time he's ever lived by himself,
and it's kind of weird, but I told him he was welcome to visit
any time he liked, and he promised to take me up on that. I
also made time to talk with Grant, and while spanking didn't
come up, he did fall in love with my library, and he's going to
try to come back over tonight for a private visit/tour.

I should probably start a bio on him, but for now, I'm just
going to say a few more words about Grant.
He did come over last night. He arrived just before 7pm.
Originally he was just going to stay 'a couple of hours', but
ended up being here until about 10:30. I had to get him a towel
so he wouldn't drool on the floor in my library. I might be
exaggerating a bit, but he fell in love with my 221-B Baker
Street Bookcase. Besides my Sherlock Holmes books, it has
autographed pictures of six different actors who've played
Holmes, a (reproduction) title card from Adventures of Sherlock
Holmes, the deerstalker, magnifying glass, and meerschaum pipe
made famous by Rathbone (I think), mini busts of Holmes and
       Watson, and some Funko figures.
Let me say that Grant is probably not what most people would
consider good looking, but I think he's very cute. He has blue
eyes, brown hair, and braces. He's not especially tall - maybe
5'7" or 8", and he's probably carrying a few extra pounds for
his height, but it's just a bit of padding, and just the proper
amount to give him a nicely rounded rear end.
We were interrupted by Jake at one point, and I was able to
start Grant discussing David (his younger brother). David is
12, and just finishing 6th grade. Grant is grounded these days,
when he gets in trouble, but he said, "David still gets spanked
when Dad gets mad at him, but he gets away with too much; he
doesn't get in nearly as much trouble as I used to." No details
on how things go when David's in trouble. Grant also paused to
wonder what's going to happen the next time he gets in trouble,
what with him working now and all.

Very popular feelings among elder brothers :D
Sounds like a nice bunch of employees.

I try hard to hire people who don't just want a job, but want to
work for me. I try to find people who are really interested in
the things we sell. Then I try even harder to find the ones who
are interested in those things, like dealing with customers, and
can still get the job done. It's a challenge, but the good ones
       really stand out.
