       Age range for spanking

What are your opinions on the age range for spanking? I'm
referring to the non-consensual, punishment kind. I'm aware that
some countries (like Canada) have legislated the ages for
spanking, while others have out lawed it entirely. But if there
are no clear rules, what do you think the age range should be?

Spanking is such an individual experience that I don't really
think you can set age ranges for it. Some kids need it more
than others. Some grow up never needing to be spanked. (I had
one brother like that) So in general I would say every age is
good for spanking, if needed. With toddlers a smart slap to
their bare leg below their diaper or underwear is enough to get
their attention. Then on the upper level, it just depends on
the personality of the child and what works best for them, to
get the point. I really don't think there is an upper age.
Now that is all said for all forms of CP. From a simple slap to
the leg to a full ritualistic whipping. Jack has definite
definitions as to what he considers spankings, whippings,
beltings and etc. I tend to group them as the same thing. It
is a tool in the arsenal and that tool is used in the best way
       possible for the individual child.
So now I will turn this over to those who raise children as a
lifestyle and they can give you more detailed procedures and age
       levels.

By the time I was in HS (10th-12th grades) I had pretty much
quit hearing about CP at school, although it did happen
occasionally. I would say by 16 years old it was a last-resort
rather than a go-to punishment. In Elementary and Jr. High
(middle school) paddling was common and often talked about. In
a home situation I think the top age would be highly variable
and situation-specific. Some boys are through with spankings by
their teens while others are just ready to get started.

As to my favorite age to spank, it's about 11 to 14. I love the
different ways boys go through puberty, so baring a boy that age
is an added thrill. There's also the point that boys that age
feel like they're 'too old' for a spanking, and they really try
to tough it out, so it's fun to see if they can take it without
       breaking down.
As I've said before, I believe in using CP with older kids, so
I don't really think there's an upper limit. Last summer, right
after the college kids arrived home, I ended up giving swats to
a number of kids from 18 or 19 up to 22 or 23. The thing is
more about your relation with the kids, how you use CP, and what
you expect from it. I tend to use it more as a way to emphasize
that I'm unhappy with something they've done, but without having
to make a huge deal out of it, like grounding or something more
longterm would. The boys understand how I use it, and they tend
to be accepting of it, and to accept it in that way.
As for the lower rangers - while I might give a swat or two to
younger kids, especially if they do something dangerous; I don't
believe in actual spanking (more prolonged, significant
punishment) until they're old enough that they I'm sure they
understand the rules and can understand actions and consequences
       - usually about kindergarten, 5 or 6.

The interesting thing is that I didn't realize they used CP when
I was in HS. It's only been in the last 8 to 10 years that I
found out there was actually quite a bit of paddling, up to and
including seniors. The only thing is, I was in the college
prep/academic group, and most of my close friends were either
fantasy geeks or debaters - definitely not the groups who got
       into much trouble.

I am inclined to think that the Canadians have it about right:
2-12 and the effects to be transitory.

I think toddlers can benefit from a tapand think on if you dont
think they can be naughty. I think 12-14 is about the time to
phase it out and use other methods but it is impotant to be
       flexible about that

I am going to say that CP with older 'kids' works for us, but
there are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, the boys
normally have input into it - CP as one option from which they
can choose. Secondly, I rarely use 'spanking' (over the knee)
punishment with the older kids, except in special situation.
Instead, we go with a more school style punishment. Third, the
boys know that this isn't to 'teach' them anything, but it's a
way to stress that they transgressed, and that I'm unhappy with
their situation. With those caveats, they seem to find a quick
but painful paddling preferable to being grounded.

Which is why I say you need to be flexible on this question. I
wonder if it is because you have more kids around than in a more
"typicall" family situationn and therefore it is more analagous
with school in a sense where spanking often goes on to a later
age than at home. you may be also delivering a messages to
others than just the spankee at that moment? I think 15 was the
oldest I remember anyone getting it in my family

For a long time, the only way I used CP after age 15 (my boys
are usually able to get their driver's license on or close to
their 16th birthday), was if an older boy transgressed on a
grounding. Since I have never believed in heinous groundings
(like my mom did), that wasn't too common.
On the other hand, remember that it was a 16-year old who first
(more or less) ASKED to get paddled, rather than being
restricted. I don't see where I wrote it up as a story, but I
see to remember it was Mickey and Daniel coming home late, when
Daniel had been driving, but Mickey was still underage. Daniel
(or whomever the older boy had been) complained that he was
losing his car keys, while his little brother (who was still 15
at that point, I'm pretty sure) 'only' got paddled. I gave in
on that point, and both boys got the board. Apparently news
spread, because the next time an older boy was in trouble, he
requested the same option. After that, it's just become de
       regueur around here.

Restriction or grounding, when enforced, is something that teens
usually hate more than any other punishment. So I can
understand a teenager asking to be paddled instead of losing his
       car keys for the weekend.
