Ryan Edward Metcalf Wells (22)

I received this PM overnight.
I went to see Little Mermaid tonight, and thought of Ryan and
wanted to ask how he is doing. On the old board, I would have
asked on his biography thread, but it doesn't feel right to
start a thread in the Bios forum. Not being able to think of a
good place to ask, figured I would just PM you. Is Ryan still
working on a traveling show? If so, is he enjoying it, and does
he plan to make a career of it?
Thanks for everything you do,

Now, I'm not going to do a full up bio, but if Mahoover is
curious, then I figure other people might be as well.
Ryan is in college right now. While he had a great run on a
National Tour, and he could have stayed with that or moved to
another show, but he and I agree that it would be good to have
something on which to fall back in case of accident. He's a
sophomore (who delayed two years and still looks younger than
most of his classmates). Ryan is majoring in theater, but he's
also taking the classes to be able to teach.
Ryan is still acting. Not only does his school put on numerous
plays every semester, but Fort Worth/Tarrant county has a number
of regional theaters. With his training and experience, he can
get almost any part in which he's interested (and physically
compatible), and he's been performing constantly while in
school.
His big goal now is to leave school next year, but I can't blame
him for that. There is now a Broadway version of The Lightning
Thief (Percy Jackson). I find the score to be a bit too much
generic pop, but I don't dislike it either -
HTML https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrL3jOdAB5A
*, and the casting
notice for Percy is almost perfect for Ryan (Percy is 12, but
they want an adult who
strong pop-rock tenor; looking for an actor 18+ who can
believably play teens; Percy is a 12-year-old boy who finds out
he is a demi-god; he is our story’s hero and must have a strong
presence, a sense of humor, and be extremely likable; is
impulsive and moves with his instincts and emotions rather than
his head; think Daniel Radcliff, young Johnny Galecki, or Toby
Maguire; especially interested in actors with stage combat or
gymnastic experience as this role is very physical. 5’6” –
5’9
For his last show, Ryan died his hair a very dark brown, but his
councilar and I have both encouraged him to do the audition in
red.
Anyway, the show is supposed to start touring next fall, so
auditions should be next spring or maybe late winter.
So yeah, Ryan has mad tons of friends, he loves most of his
classes (theater and academics - remember that he was
valedictorian in high school, taking a full load of college prep
courses on top of his theater classes). He's also met Thomas,
who's 19 now (or 20? No, still 19,. I think). and they've been
dating for about 8 or 9 months now I think.
In other words, he's really busy and enjoying life, but not
doing a ton of stuff on which I can report. Feel free to ask
more questions, and I'll answer what I can.
* Showing what a lost cause I really am, listening to this song
makes me want to hug the kid, then take him home.

Thanks Jack, I am glad to hear that Ryan is doing well. There
is a lot of talent in the touring companies and I could see
someone making a great career out of them. But I agree that it
is good to have something to fall back on. Having already
succeeded will give Ryan a leg up if he decides to go back to
touring.

!!! I didn't know that there was going to be a Broadway version
of The Lightning Thief! How exciting! I disliked the movie but
hopefully, the play will follow the source material a bit more
closely. (Unless they want it to be stand-alone, in which case,
probably not.)
I'll be interested to see how the action/adventure scenes play
out, too. The first book is pretty episodic, so I'd like to see
how that translates, too. Does Ryan have stage combat/gymnastics
training?
Interesting song, too. I like the "good kid" parts. I suppose he
sings that after he's given the quest. I hope Ryan gets the
part! If he does, I suppose he'll be taking a leave of absence
of sorts from school?
And, sorry, did you mean doing the audition for Percy with red
hair? Ryan's a natural redhead, right?
You would definitely take Percy into your family. I definitely
see that. Wouldn't matter that he comes with mythical monsters
and all! :)

I just googled the play. It seems like it's pretty faithful to
the book. Some lyrics are quotes from the book. I've been trying
to get some of my students into watching plays, and this might
be a good start. :) Hope we get our own version here!

Journey, I already wrote the Dallas Summer Musicals, requesting
that they arrange for this show, and for exactly that reason -
it would be a great intro for kids (especially boys).
And yes, Ryan died his hair for his previous role, but I side I
thought he should audition a red-head, since the casting agents
know hair dye exists.

I actually saw The Lightning Thief at the Lucille Lortel.
Although I'm not the intended audience, I (and the other adults
in the theatre) found it delightful. The kids, and there were
LOTS of kids, including lots of boys (a rarity in theatre-going
in NYC) totally loved it. Highly recommended, and smart
marketing if musical theatre wants to have new generations of
patrons.

I'm glad he's doing well, I hope his relationship with his new
boyfriend brings him much happiness, and I think he's smart for
going for his dream but also not closing other doors in case
that doesn't work out.

Thanks, Daniel.
The honest truth is that Ryan enjoys performing at school, or in
the small, local theaters, as much as he did touring. That
doesn't mention all the downsides to touring (are all the
upsides to making a living doing what you love). For now, he's
happy, and that's what's important to me.

I didn't realize how long it's been since I updated this! I
guess a lot of what I've said about Ryan has appeared in the
more general 'college boys' sections.
To update, Ryan is still dating Thomas. I don't know how
serious they are, but they seem to get along great. Thomas is
20 now (Ryan turned 23 a couple of weeks ago), but they started
school together and are taking some of the same classes.
They're apartment is too small for me to share with another
person, but they seem to be getting along fine. Their living
room is big enough for a few guests, and they have a decent
sized 'dining area'. They have a few people over to watch
musicals or play board or card games. Ryan would love to get a
role playing game going, but he feels like he has too much other
stuff going on, since he does all his school requirements, then
also works with a regional theater which isn't too far from the
school.
He called to chat last night, which is the reason I'm updating
this now. Nothing especially going on, he just felt like
talking with Dad. 2016 was a really bad time for the Dallas
Summer Musicals, and I'm not sure we went to three productions
(I'm pretty sure they had both Wicked and Lion King that year,
but we've seen those several times now, and it's hard to get
actually excited about them anymore). On the other hand, this
year we're really excited and even the least show they're
offering is something we really want to see.
Outside of that, there's really not a lot going on. Thomas was
at the library doing research, and Ryan just wanted to chat for
a while. It made me realize I should at least say he's doing
okay, and that he seems pretty happy in his life.
