       2/14/19 - Another Wreck
By: Jack Date: February 14, 2019, 2:42 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I haven't been around much the last several days, but there was
a good reason beyond my normal 'being busy'.
I had allowed Kaden to drive Sunday afternoon, and we were hit.
The other driver took off. The thing is, we were spun a bit,
and I managed to smack my face into the side window just right
to break my nose. Beyond soreness, there's nothing too
horrible, but my eyes have been swollen and puffy, and it's hard
for me to spend too much time looking at a screen. Beyond that,
while I have been working, I've also been sleeping a bit more
than usual - coming home to nap in the afternoon.
The worst part is that I was just getting over a cold, I have to
be very careful blowing my nose right now, and our Texas weather
has continued to be crazy, so I've been having sinus problems as
well. Like I said - nothing too horrible, but it hasn't been
       fun either.
We were in my Lexus when the wreck happened. It was a 2006
Lexus GS - a nice and dependable car, but 12 years old with a
ton of miles on it, so they totaled it. This car is mostly for
taking a couple of the younger kids and maybe a friend of theirs
or two someplace, so I'm thinking of a 4-door, Camry to replace
it, though I also really like the Nissan Maxima.
Anyway, while it was a hit and run, it occurred at an
intersection, and they were able to find it on a red light
camera video, so there's no question the other driver was at
fault. They were able to get his license plate, he's already
been arrested, and he did have insurance. While this is Texas,
meaning we won't get much for the car, we should be able to
cover the doctor's bills with no problem.
In the meantime, I have to see a plastic surgeon tomorrow to
decide if my nose is going to be okay or if I'll need surgery.
And that's that. While I look like a particularly sad raccoon,
everything is pretty much back to normal now.

:o Geez! That's awful. I'm glad the injuries were not even
worse, though. It shows how dangerous cars are. You may drive
for years without a problem, but at any time there might be an
accident, and you don't only depend on your own driving.
Who else was in the car? Were yours the worst injuries?

I am glad that everyone is somewhat OKAY. Injuries could have
been worse, which brings me to, They Should Throw the Book at
the Hit and Run driver. That driver knew they hit you. They
knew the car spun. The injuries could have been life
threatening. Stop to at least check to see if everyone is going
to live. It could mean the difference between a suspended
license and going to prison for manslaughter.
Hopefully your nose will heal without plastic surgery. A
boxers nose could be in vogue now?
How is Kaden? Getting hit that seriously when still learning to
drive could be emotionally upsetting. His mind will go over and
over the incident trying to figure out what he could have done
differently. Yes, defensive driving is a must. But sometimes
no matter how defensive you are, a crash will find you. For
Kaden it was probably an unavoidable accident. For the other
guy it was avoidable and criminal so not an accident on their
       part.
Get the rest you need. The body heals while sleeping. So get
as much sleep as you can get.

Mine were the worst injuries It was just me and Kaden. I did
let him stay home the next day, and we kept moist heat on his
neck for a while. He was really fine. There wouldn't have been
much trouble at all, except I'd been looking at the side when
       the car was hit...

St. Valentine's usually isn't a big deal around here. Sean
Strouse is taking Parker out for dinner tonight, and Van is
taking Eliza for a dance club meeting and a late meal, but I
don't think anyone else has any plans.

I'm not sure if I made this clear, so I'll risk repeating....
I took Kaden with me to see the video, when the cops called to
say they had it. While it was pretty much automatically his
(the other guy's) fault, since it was hit and run, the video
made it clear that he'd tried to make a right turn on red
without yielding, which is what caused the wreck. He was a bit
upset, and especially upset that I was hurt while he was
driving, but the police officer and I both made it very clear to
him that it wasn't his fault, and he seems to be coping okay.
