A Club Red Christmas
by Jack Wells
“Craig Alexander, you are thirteen-years old. You have to start
thinking.”
I squirmed in my seat. Mom looked at me and rolled her eyes.
“It’s Christmas shopping, Craig. It’s not going to kill you to
do your own.”
“I’ve done my own before,” I protested.
The people we’d been waiting for finally pulled out, and Mom was
able to pull into a spot right by the front of the mall. When
she was in the spot, she put the car in park and turned to me
again.
“How many gifts do you need?” she asked.
“Gavin and Riley, you, one for the club party, and one for… I’m
supposed to get something for Kiley this year.”
“And don’t forget to get a card or something for Linda and
Dave.”
“I already got these cards to mail. Can’t I give them one of
those?”
Mom shrugged, then nodded her agreement.
“Why aren’t you getting anything for your dad?”
“Already did. Did for Riley, too, but I figured you’d flip if I
didn’t mention him.”
She just smiled and shrugged again, but more like she was
granting the point this time.
“Do you have your phone?”
“Yes, ma’am,” I said, showing it to her.
“Fully charged?”
I checked. “Ninety percent.”
“And is the….”
“Yes, the ringer is on!”
“Watch your mouth young man.”
I smiled, and she smiled back, so I knew I was safe.
“Get out of here. Do your shopping. We’re meeting for dinner
at 6pm. See you then.”
We got out, Mom locked the car with her remote, and I took off
on my own.
I ended up not getting a gift for the Christmas party, since I
didn’t want to explain why I thought a belt would be a great
gift. I finished the rest of my shopping, and was waiting in
front of the restaurant when Jordan and Kevin walked by. We
talked for a while, before my parents showed up.
I wanted to tell them about the vid I had of Aidan getting
spanked, but if I did, they’d want to see it, and I just wasn’t
sure. We did talk a bit about shopping for gifts, but we
weren’t supposed to tell whose name we’d drawn, so that limited
that talk. On the other hand, Jordan admitted to having had his
picture taken with Santa Claus, but only because his mom wanted
a family shot of all the kids, and she’d ended up bribing him
fifty bucks to do it.
Yeah, I’d do that myself.
About that time, Mom and Dad showed up. They invited Kev and
Jordan to join us, but they were going to see Robin Hood, and
they didn’t have time to have a sit down meal before it started.
They asked me to go, but Mom wanted us to spend the evening
together, and I just didn’t feel like fighting about it. Plus,
she’d promised to bake peanut butter fudge that night, which was
worth skipping a movie.
Riley and Gavin wanted to wrap their own presents, so we all got
together in the living room with the stuff we were taking to
Aunt Linda and Uncle Dave’s. Dad lit a fire while we were doing
that, and he put some of the pine cones on it, so it smelled
really good. The ones we had changed color while they burned,
so it was pretty cool to watch, too.
With Christmas music in the background - mostly Mannheim
Steamroller - Mom took her gift for Aunt Linda and wrapped it,
going slow and explaining what she was doing. I knew how to
wrap a gift, but Mom’s always looked really pretty, so I watched
to catch her little tricks.
I knew Kylie liked drawing, so I’d gotten her a set of colored
pencils, markers, and crayons, that came in a carrying case, and
it had a couple of erasers and sharpeners with it. It’d
actually been on sale, so I’d gotten a small drawing pad too.
Mom showed me how to stack them, then wrap them so it made one
odd-shaped gift. I used the purple snowflake paper, then wasn’t
sure how to finish it.
“What color are the snowflakes?”
“White?”
“Then why not white ribbon or bows or something?”
I tried, and it actually looked okay.
We all broke up and went to our room, while Mom went to the
kitchen. An hour later, we were back downstairs, and there were
gifts under the tree for everyone, and the fudge was ready.
Mom and Gavin really wanted to watch A Christmas Story before
bedtime, but Dad and Riley were voting towards Monopoly. It’s
not that I dislike Riley, but Gav’s my favorite, so I voted with
him. We went, cleaned up, and put on pajamas, while Dad popped
some corn to go with the movie and fudge.
“I thought you didn’t like A Christmas Story,” Riley complained,
while we were both in the bathroom.
“I don’t mind it the first time or two every year,” I answered.
“I just get tired of it after a while.”
He headed back to his room to finish changing, and I added to
myself, “Besides, it’s really hard to play Monopoly with you and
Dad and still have a happy, peaceful evening.”

Hmmm - Craig still can't decide what to do with his dynamite
video. :D
I remember Monopoly and the painfully slow ending while players
slowly run out of money. Wouldn't be my choice.
