Do you guys think 'Indie' is a Genre?

Recently my friend introduced me to this band Deerhunter n when
I asked him what kind of music it was he told me it was 'indie
rock'. Ive nvr heard of it so I did what anyone else would do
and looked in up on Google. However depending on what website I
went on I found a good percentage of people who didnt even think
it was a real thing. I wanted to hear some nonbiased arguments!
       What do you all think?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! and it frustrates me so profoundly that people
       think that it is!
       INDIE!
       IS!
       NOT!
       A REAL!
       GENRE!

I'm not sure I understand how you could ignore the existence of
such a prevalent genre as Indie?

See! Exactly! Indie is a contradiction. The entire alleged
purpose of INDIE was to be INDEpendent! and being signed to a
major label doesn't exactly fit under my idea of what it means
to be independent ... Everyone has to make money to be able to
have a career in music and being independent is not exactly the
way to do it and to brag about that is even worse!

We can't be so literal and concrete all the time! As you just
said they have to make money somehow. I believe it is perfect
okay for a musician to be under contract with a major label. The
term applies mostly to the sound of music they play it doesn't
have to necessarily apply to their way of living

I agree with steph! it's perfectly acceptable for indie bands to
become signed! like all things music also evolves and changes
       over time.

I despise the fact that indie is considered a genre! I’ve
honestly heard 3 very different definition when I asked my
friends about it who all listen to indie very extensively! 1. It
is an attitude which I mean clearly isn’t a genre of music 2. It
is the intentionally unsigned, independent status of the band
which if we look at some of the bands at the forefront of indie
music that clearly doesn’t apply making the ideal of the genre
dead already and finally 3. It is a genre of music and a genre
is defined by similar sounds which when you have everything from
indie folk to indie rock to indie psychedelic, I really don’t
think there is enough consistency to really define indie as a
       genre.

I see where you are coming from and logically that all makes
sense but regardless we cannot just ignore the existence of
indie rock as a genre when it has such a large following and
such successful affiliates! And I think that indie bands being
signed is awesome! It shows that you can make music that you
enjoy and still be successful and that’s a major win for indie!
The whole purpose of the movement of being independent from
major labels was to gain creative freedom over your art.

You make a good point! But even so I still don’t think it should
exist as a genre on its own. I think it would be better as a
subgenre of different genres to better classify the music.

Thanks for the input but I think I reached the conclusion that
music should exist under two categories! “Music that I like” and
“Music that I don’t like”! I’ve been thinking about it and I
decided we spend too much time labeling music when we should
       just enjoy it!
