Re: Sector 11 , outside Imperial space

An hour later
Admiral Silavak felt triumphant as he watched the two warbirds
lock tractor beams onto the rebel battlestar Firebrand. The crew
of that doomed ship would now experience Romulan justice
firsthand, after their attacks on the Traylax and other
nonaligned nations that traded with the Romulans. Furthermore,
he would be returning a decommissioned ship to Imperial
authorities, where it would likely be scrubbed of any new
equipment the rebels might've installed. He was painfully aware
that Nanclus, the powerless Mogai-class warbird would have to be
abandoned and set to self-destruct to prevent it from falling
into rebel hands. The other ships were helping in the
evacuation, which removed an extra burden from Silavak.
L'Karn - "No further movement from the Vulcans. Shall I cease
monitoring their actions?"
Silavak - "There is nothing further to be gained. If they wish
to scan the area once we depart, its their choice. Our nations
are allies. Cease monitoring them."
Helm centurion - "Admiral, the other fleet ships report Nanclus
has been evacuated. There were only 137 survivors out of a crew
of 550."
Silavak - "Is Nanclus set for self-destruct?"
Helm centurion - "Confirmed."
Silavak - "Then have all ships set course for Imperial space,
Romulan jurisdiction. Warp seven point five."
The Helm centurion keyed in the command transmission carefully.
L'Karn took that moment to walk to the admiral, a look of
concern on his chiseled face.
L'Karn - "Admiral, we must assume the rebels have set up some
booby traps aboard their battlestar which would react to a
tractor beam. Before we go to warp, we should consider sweeping
the entire ship clean of any devices."
Silavak - "You bring up a good point, L'Karn. You will lead the
teams that sweep the enemy ship clean, and once you do, report
to me immediately."
L'Karn was silent. He might've made the case for sweeping the
rebel ship clean of explosive devices, but that didn't mean he
wanted to lead the teams to do so. He might not have been a
warrior like Silavak, but he wasn't stupid, either. But he also
knew that to disobey orders would bring certain death to himself
and his family, because Romulan honor could not allow them to
survive to carry the shame of dishonor to the next generation.
Before Silavak could press further, and potentially draw his
Honor Blade, L'Karn bowed in submission, then made his way off
the bridge. He passed a centurion on his way to fill the station
L'Karn vacated minutes before, without even acknowledging the
youth. As he entered the corridor that would take him to the
Transporter Room, L'Karn suddenly realized that he had been
given the power of authority on the captured rebel ship. The
thought helped to dispel his sense of frustration, even if only
slightly.
The Romulan squadron departed the system forty-five minutes
after evacuation of Nanclus, leaving the Mogai-class warbird
to drift for a brief time into the void of space. As the last of
the Romulan ships-with their rebel battlestar trophy under dual
tractor beams-departed at FTL speeds, Nanclus exploded with a
brilliance that almost matched that of a star going nova. Shards
of the vessel flew apart in several directions, with some
managing to escape the brief fireball, while the majority were
vaporized in those seconds before fireball gave way to vacuum.
The expanding shockwave struck the lifeless hulk of battlestar
Butcher and it too fragmented and flew apart in a secondary
explosion. Within moments the twin novae dissipated in the
vacuum of space, leaving little debris behind as a testimony to
the firefight that happened just two hours ago.
Two days later, Office of Praetor Kamemor. Romulus
Admiral Silavak had never been happier to be back in familiar
settings as he was when he beamed down to Ki Baratan, capital
city of both Romulus and the Romulan Star Empire, Founder Race
of Trekylon. Upon his arrival, a duo of uhlans met him and
escorted him to the Hall of State's domed structure. He entered
the Central Chamber, where the Romulan Senate met in session,
and was impressed by the bird-of-prey emblem above the praetor's
throne, the star map of the Romulan jurisdictional area of
Trekylon on the marble floor, and the Great Seal of Trekylon
above the doors he had just passed through, though he could only
see each briefly as the uhlans led him through a single door to
the praetor's office. There, Kamemor rose from her chair behind
the ebonite desk and offered a respectful bow, which he
acknowledged with a salute.
Kamemor *seating* - "I hear that your mission was a success in
spite of losing one warbird to the rebels."
Silavak showed no outward emotion, but inside he was already
fuming at the revelation that the praetor had been told about
Nanclus. He wondered who could've told her. He suspected L'Karn
or Yokar could have informed her via private communication.
Silavak *out loud* - "The loss was unfortunate, but all
precautions were taken, and the crew were rescued prior to our
withdrawal from that region of space."
Kamemor - "You fulfilled your obligation as a soldier and
commander, and that shall be recognized by your elevation to
Fleet Admiral. How many men did you lose in all?"
Silavak - "461 in total, including 443 from Nanclus"
Kamemor rose from her chair slowly, painfully aware of the high
loss of life in the defense of the Traylax. But because the
Traylax were considered vital trade partners, the need to
maintain her routes became paramount, especially given the
current state of the Gaian government. Nonetheless, 461 people,
brave Romulans, had died.
Silavak - "The rebels on Firebrand amounted to only some 260+
people out of a crew complement of a thousand. The higher
ranking officers we have already locked up, awaiting trial. The
lesser officers will be turned over to Imperial Security Bureau
of Investigation tomorrow."
Kamemor - "Drake I has left the fate of the high officers among
the rebel POWs to us, as they did attack a trade partner of
ours. However, he's also sending a representative to bear
witness to the trial. He insisted on it."
Silavak - "What of the other Founder Races?"
Kamemor - "The Klingons have been affected just as badly as we
have by the rebel piracy against their trading partners. The
Kinshaya and Cardassians have been hit by rebel strikes on their
outposts three times in the last two days. Seems the only ones
not hit by rebel attacks are the Imperial Vulcans, Gorn, and
Tholians. In the Tholians' case its due to their exasperating
xenophobia and suspicions. How the Gorn managed to make a deal
with them is beyond my understanding."
Silavak - "Has there been any move to form a coalition fleet to
assist the Earthers in their civil war?"
Kamemor - "Nothing yet. Everyone is still biding their time."
Silavak grunted. He was not surprised at the revelation that the
other races were still not moving from their armed neutrality.
What Kamemor said surprised him.
Kamemor - "The Klingons have begun shipping weapons to the
Loyalists, while the Gorn and Tholians have reached an agreement
that slightly modifies the Tholians' original sealed-border
policy."
Silavak - "Will you bring up the Traylax Incident and the
Nanclus at the next meeting with their heads-of-state?"
Kamemor - "I will. I'll also include the Cherokee and Namekians
in the meeting, as it appears the Namekian princess has been
abducted by the same mercenary group that abducted the
Inuyashian empress."
Silavak - "When did they take the empress?"
Kamemor - "The Brave Rebecca was seized just four days ago.
Great Michael has gone on his own to rescue her."
Silavak - "Praetor, I'd like your permission to have my ship
track down Great Michael. I would consider it an honor to bring
the Royal Couple back to Inuyashia safely."
Kamemor - "You certain you wish to do this? This will delay your
possible participation in the multinational fleet."
Silavak considered the matter. On the one hand, as Fleet
Admiral, he could be at the forefront of the multinational force
helping the Humans to liberate the captive colony worlds. On the
other hand, the singular honor of hosting the Great Michael and
the Brave Rebecca would be a boon to his hopes of eventually
ascending to the High Command.
Silavak - "I repeat my request, Madam Praetor."
Kamemor nodded in capitulation.
Kamemor - "Very well, then. Have your crew ready to depart in
two hours. I'll contact Inuyashian authorities and get the last
known coordinates of Michael's fighter."
Silavak - "I'll have my ship ready within the hour, Madam
Praetor."
He saluted Kamemor, then turned and made his way out of the
office, where the uhlans waited to escort him out of the Hall of
State. Kamemor sat back down in her chair and regarded Silavak's
retreating form, hopeful that she made the right choice.
