Jirihito - "Who is giving them assistance?"
Osake - "That is the other part of it. It appears that a nation
called the Great Houses of Xie have provided the rebels with
impressive technology as well as funds. The rebels are sharing
those funds with Houses Moritani and Ishikawa."
Jirihito became furious. He wished that his training target had
been one of the Moritani or Ishikawa traitors instead of a
hologram, for it would've enabled the shogun to more properly
vent his aggressions.
Jirihito - "I want you to collect as much proof as you can get,
quietly. I will save this for Trekylon. As for the traitor
families, follow them but take no action for now. I want to see
how many enemies they draw to us before moving on them."
Osake - "Do you not wish to have them eliminated now, Sire?"
Jirihito - "No. I want to see how many wolves are attracted to
the bait before making my move. Go now."
All three daimyo bowed at the waist and left the room. Jirihito
activated a commchannel to his personal communications
attendant.
Jirihito - "Get me a secure diplomatic channel to Trekylon. I
want to inform Drake I of the snake in the firegrass."

Situation Room, beneath the Imperial Palace. Imperiopolis
Drake I was looking over the reports from the front-lines while
the circular projection table showed the current progress of the
battles on Bespia. The fighting had been fierce for six days, as
the rebels were increasingly becoming so desperate that they
were committing kamikaze offensives in the hope of slowing the
Imperial advance. New Oberon had already been recovered for the
empire, which restored a major breadbasket system to the empire
at a time when food prices were being artificially kept afloat
by loans from Inuyashia and the Intergalactic Federacy faction.
Several of the generals were pointing at the global holoimage,
and discussing strategy. A young private, likely an adjunct to
one of the generals, came up to Drake I rather hurriedly.
Private - "Sire, there is a subspace message for you, from the
Shogun of the Greater Empire of Showa."
Drake I - "Computer, display incoming subspace message, all
visual and audio."
The image of Bespia's rotating globe shifted to show the
holographic image of Jirihito's head and face. Just enough of
the background was also displayed that Drake I knew he was
sitting in his private office. Perhaps private offices aren't
just for emperors and queens after all, he thought to himself.
Drake I - "Konnichiwa, Honored Shogun. I am pleased to see you.
I must apologize for not having a representative at your
installation as permanent shogun."
Jirihito - "I am also honored to see you still on the Ruby
Throne. I understand not having a representative as you are
involved in a bitter war against traitors to your rule. That is
in fact part of the reason for this communication."
Drake I - "Have you had further problems with rebel pirates on
your outliers?"
Jirihito - "We have been efficient in dealing with the rebel
pirates. What troubles me, and will no doubt trouble you is that
two of the noble Daimyo houses have turned traitor as well. They
may already be throwing their support behind the rebels."
Drake I - "I hope not. We have enough problems with the rebels
without another group of rebels siding with them."
Jirihito - "Do not worry. I will deal with the traitor Houses
myself. It is the rebels that concern me. They have been
receiving substantial enough assistance that in the last
engagements with them, we've lost at least one ship to them. The
last rebel ship we destroyed, we scanned the debris to look for
weapon components."
Drake I - "What did you find?"
Jirihito - "You have what on your former homeworld would be
called a wolf in the fold. The weapon components are not from
your nation or even from New Aztlan. They're foreign in origin."
Drake I - "Specifically?"
Jirihito - "You know of a nation called The Great Houses of
Xie?"
Drake I - "Unfortunately, we do. They were instrumental in the
ending of a potential rebel coup on Azuria, though they
overstayed their welcome and had to get the Inuyashian boot.
They've since withdrawn the bulk of their fleet to just outside
Imperial space at the urging of our other coalition partners.
You saying that the Great Houses have been playing both sides
against the middle?"
Jirihito - "It would seem that way. They may be hoping that you
and the rebels will weaken each other so severely that they can
then move in on several of your worlds. They already have an
interest in Azuria if what you've told me is true. They may not
stop there."
Drake I - "So what does the Great Houses have to do with your
current situation with the rebel Daimyo?"
Jirihito - "I fear they may also be supplying the traitors with
weapons and money. They fear a government and shogun who could
become friendly toward Trekylon. I have all the data from our
scans available for transmission to you."
Drake I - "Thank you. I fully intend to pursue this information
and have a nice heart-to-heart with Lord Fujiro about this.
Naturally, I expect that he will play innocent and even accuse
me of trying to instigate war with the Great Houses, that is
their way. In the meantime, I will have Chancellor Kurn send a
force of 12 Klingon ships to attempt to block Xie weapons
shipments to the rebels and your rebel Daimyo."
Jirihito - "I wish you success in your quest to reunify your
people, Majesty. I will provide whatever assistance you need.
You have my gratitude. Sayonara Drake-san."
As Jirihito's image shifted back to the globe of Bespia, Drake I
sat back in his chair feeling as though he had been betrayed.
Despite the fiasco over Azuria, he had truly believed the Great
Houses had sent their fleet to assist in the fear that a more
militant Trekylon under Vergusson and Tate's dictatorship would
result in a newer and more costly war with the Concordiat. While
he didn't have enough proof to bring to Lord Fujiro yet, he
resolved to collect that additional evidence and at the same
time stop a potential second front from developing.
