       Mini to Large Johnny Five
By: decepts Date: February 9, 2013, 2:16 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I am just curious what others think about what Thomas Jozwiak
(from jozrobotics.com) little resin and aluminum robots he has
done? Also I am curious how he went about building his full
size robot. Anyone have any ideas? From what I have studied on
him and from my best understanding is that he has created molds
from the original robot to help build what he has made. Is this
true? Same goes with the owner of robot hut museum
       (
  HTML http://www.robothut.robotnut.com/rj5p1.html)
       and his robot. So
exactally how many people have had access to the origional
Johnny Five? I figured I'd start some kind of conversation
       here. :)

Thomas Jozwiak worked with Mike Van Plew, as I understand it, to
create the Robot V. It is not accurate to the Johnny Five robot
and that was done on purpose so that he could publicly sell the
model without having any legal trouble. I think it is great
that they were able to do that for everyone who wanted a Johnny
Five model, although, I do not own one.
His full sized robot is not fully functional and is only
equipped with basic movements. He did not create molds from the
original robot in order to create his, he used information
gathered by Terry Andrews Jr. in 2004. For a very short period
of time he worked with input-inc (before I joined), but was not
interested in the level of detail or accuracy that we were
aiming for. He left with incomplete CAD files and with the help
of Richard Steele, another former team member, they fabricated
his robot. There are a lot of flaws on his full size Johnny
Five, many of which are visible with the naked eye. He did what
he did to build the robot as fast as he could and unfortunately
       the final product shows this.
John Rigg had access to a stunt-bot I believe (one of the prop
bots that was mostly made of wood). His Johnny Five is much
more accurate in comparison. Although it is made of mostly wood
itself, which would make it's mobility limited. Looks great
though! We actually sent him some tires at one point I believe.
I haven't seen pictures of that though! :)
No one, as far as I know, has had access to the fully functional
hero-bot other than Terry Andrews Jr., which is why we stress
that unless the information came from us it is not going to be
accurate. No one has spent the time and put as much effort as
we have into 1:1 replicating Johnny Five.
Others not named here are also building Johnny Five robots, but
like Thomas' build they are not accurate to the original and/or
       are fundamentally wrong.
This in no way was meant to put down anyone's efforts, just
stating the facts. I hope this answers your questions.

I know you are not intentionally putting down others work but it
kind of struck a nerve with me. In the past I have posted some
of my work and had people really like it. I had zero to go off
of other than pictures. I posted a picture of my neck cylinders
and lower head plate probably a year ago. I had made my own
clevice ends instead of threaded balls because it was easier.
Terry made a comment about them probably not working or
something. I know for sure he wasn't intentionally putting my
work down or anything but he also only had my picture to go off
of. My mock up worked flawlessly with full articulation. My math
worked. I have since changed my design only for aesthetics. A
lot of us have very limited funds or time and just build what we
can or design things how we want them. I wouldn't call the work
flawed. Mine for example will function differently and some
parts will look different and that's by design and choice. Some
things I wish the movie robot did or changes in certain looks.
Everyone has different tastes and ideas. Anyways, I wish
everyone the best with their builds, large or small. This is a
great hobby involving an iconic robotic citizen.

I'm sorry that this upset you. Unfortunately the above user
asked a question and the answer was given. We don't by any
means want to upset anyone, but we have set out to help others
build accurate Johnny Five robots. You are completely free to
do what you wish, of course, but if you aren't building an
accurate replica it is unfair to say otherwise. I agree with
you that if you can accomplish even 1/4 of what we have on your
own you deserve a "job well done". The fact is though that we DO
put ridiculous hours and work into our designs and ideas and we
DO make sacrifices in order to do what we are doing. We aren't
rich either which is why we are designing this to be as cost
effective as possible. Even doing everything in house as we
have it's still a very expensive project. Different tastes and
ideas are one thing, but we are doing something very specific.
The plain fact is if you want a 1:1 screen accurate Johnny Five
we have the information, tools, and skills. Once again Steve I
did not mean to upset you, just deliver the cold, hard facts of
       the Johnny Five robot.
We support everyone's builds, ideas and creations.

I totally get what you are saying. No need to apologize. An
example of doing something different is the way I am doing my
shoulder movements. I just can't see spending the money for the
big servos for my build. I redesigned the joint using my own
customized motors and visually, you won't be able to tell. I
think we care call in this together. Its strange to me how
different the johnny five community is compared to say, the r2d2
community. Its always been so hard to get any information. No
bad blood here though. Keep up the good work and I'll be sure to
share my work with you all. I'll keep asking questions as well.
       Thanks.

Interesting... So why did Thomas Jozwiak leave the group? I
want to say somewhere I read someone had a origional wood
version of J5 is this John Rigg? Do you guys have any pictures
of this? I would be curious what this looks like. Thanks for
the information it is very interesting to hear what others and
others alike are doing and why they choose the actions they do.
       :)

Oh I didn't realize that was the guy. LOL... Yeah this was the
very first J5 I found when doing some searching. :) Yeah he did
       a good job on his.
