neck cylinder balls for ball and socket joint

Here is a link to some ready made 1/2" balls pre drilled and
tapped to 8-32. They are made of brass. You can also find them
       all over eBay.

       I
know nylon is what was used but if you don't want to make your
own, or don't have the skills(which you absolutely need to build
J5) then you can order these.

       Hi AZ67Mustang,
"I strongly recommend using the Nylon type. The cup sockets are
made from 6061 aluminum, a harder ball material such as steel or
brass would likely over time wear out the aluminum socket
assembly which is very difficult to replace. We re-designed that
ball and socket assembly to hold up to a tested 200 LB of force
without thread failure. The re-design of that socket assembly
means that those nylon balls can be easily replaced in under 5
minutes and cost under a buck to do so. Note, do not use
lubricant in the ball and socket assembly as it just attracts
"FOD" and will actually speed up any frictional wear within the
       assembly." (Terry Andrews Jr.)
We have spent years reverse engineering and testing these
mechanisms, just trust us. Many people attempting to build this
robot do not realize how many small problems that were on the
original. It was a prop for a movie and not a real robot. We
are building the best that can possibly be produced for the
least amount of money. We also heavily keep future maintenance
       in mind when designing.

I used brass balls with aluminum sockets. I machined the sockets
in two parts that bolt together. Easy to manufacture and
replace. In my experience aluminum and brass used together has
very little galling. As for lubricants, if I were to use any, I
would use Anhydrous Lanolin. The sockets I made fit so nicely
and rotate so smoothly I won't even be considering using a
lubricant. I made my test sockets in about 30 minutes with my
mill, a band saw, a drill, and a tap. I took my aluminum piece,
cut it in half and machined a 1/2" half circle in each one. Then
I placed the two pieces together and drilled through them. Then
I tapped the holes on one half of them. These were for a test
fit. They work incredibly well. Now I will spend some time
making the actual parts for my build. I'll see if I can attach a
       photo with my phone.
