The Left... Now to Smudge the Room...

Guest left yesterday. Couldn't have been soon enough. I had to
print out instructions on how to use a Roku remote. Didn't like
our yogurt (they ask for plain sugar-free, we bought the best
local brand... two ingredients, milk and culture). So much of
what I carefully put in the room, put on the floor. Picked out
the fruit from the cereal. I felt like I could do nothing right.
The attitude reminded of this...

Hmmmm. I could use a mood refresh. I may have stayed in this
business one mood too many.
Ever seen the movie, “Tremors”? There is a line in it where
Val says to Earl, “ I think we decided to leave Perfection just
one damn day too late!”
My husband and I have adopted the line and, only one month into
the season, we are saying to each other, “ Just one damn year
too late!”

Thank you so much for reminding me that I came to the perfect
place for me! It is not a tourist mecca.
Over the years I admit I did have a few financially scary times,
but not many. I have had so very few of the "PLEASE do not find
us again" guests that I still enjoy this. The house has done
what I asked of it for the most part - it paid the expenses of
the house and sometimes a little bit more. Now I do not even
have to spend much on marketing, I have 28 years of links.

Yep, some guests annoy me, as a little roadside motel that was
rather tired back in our beginning, I could tell some tales. In
time I figure I learned to avoid some of the problem guests by
making changes or changing my own expectations. It's easier to
change me than others.
Some years ago, Louie arrived on a motorcycle, stayed a bit
longer than some guests, always something, and I think he
managed to lock his key in the room twice a day. Maybe I find
the characters interesting, Louie and I were email friends until
he passed away.
This weekend a couple called asking to arrive a day early, more
business is always good. About time I dozed off for the night
they managed to set off the smoke alarm by vaping in the room.
It's a rude awaking as it sets off strobes and horns and calls
the fire department. It would be nice if folks followed the
rules of the house, and I didn't have to stand outside in my
robe waiting on the fire guys to arrive. The plus side, they
enjoyed their visit and wrote a great review.
I can't change others, I can only change my reaction.

I feel blessed, in this our 35th year of hosting. We have
managed to tailor our business, now down from 3 large
accommodations to one cottage, weekly stays, kind, grateful,
thoughtful, clean returning-guests-only. The B+B has managed to
carry us through thick and thin, retirement, serious illness and
some unanticipated challenges. It continues to bring us joy and
income. No advertising needed, everyone pays with cash or check
and the breakfast is reduced to Continental, stocked in the
cottage, self-served. We invite our favorite guests over for a
glass of wine on the porch to catch up on life and can honestly
say we totally enjoy the business even as dear hubby works his
way through his 81st year of life! The 2 private suites in the
house are now available for our friends and family to come visit
during high season and provides us with privacy and company at
the same time. Hang in there folks...!
