       Taking the Weekend Off
By: Generic Date: March 28, 2024, 11:09 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Up to last week, no one had booked for Easter. So, we decided to
close for Easter and take a long weekend off, in NYC! I'm going
to find me some of that NYC salsa... to heck with PACE.
We are going to leave late this afternoon, drive down to about
130km away and take the city train in, so we don't have to have
       the car in the city.
Of course, nothing can happen without a little drama....
Man calls, claims he made a reservation that we didn't confirm
and it's for that day, until the 29th. Well, you didn't get a
confirmation, you don't have a reservation.... he waited until
the day of arrival to call us to say that he didn't get a
       confirmation. Sorry! (Not sorry)
Next weekend we are full... Eclipse long weekend

Good for you! As my Mama always said, "It's only money and money
is only as good as what you can do with it!" Giving yourself a
getaway is the best kind of good!
       Happy Easter!

Same here. I have 1 room booked tonight, and nothing for the
rest of the weekend. And next weekend completely full with a
waiting list, due to the eclipse. We're supposed to have over 4
minutes of "totality" here. I have people coming from Seattle,
       Miami, all over the place.
All six of my rooms booked over a year ago for the eclipse day,
and a couple of days before that. All but one of those
reservations eventually cancelled. In every case I raised the
price they had booked with, and the room rented again, at the
       higher rate, within 2 days.
Most recent cancellation was just a week ago, someone who had
booked it 16 months ago. I told him, no worries. And again, I
raised the rate $150 over what he was going to pay, and it
rebooked within 24 hours. I'm amazed at how many people just
started looking for a room this close to the eclipse. Poor
       planning!
It's a nice opportunity to make a little extra money, but in the
great scheme of things, it's a drop in the bucket and barely
worth the extra trouble (most of them are piling 4 people in the
rooms, asking for late check out, etc.).

We are JUST at the edge of the totality. The northern suburb...
       isn't

Got up this morning and found a voicemail that came in about
midnight last night, "We have come to see the eclipse, need a
room for 2 people tonight and tomorrow night, and perhaps for 5
       nights."
I'm guessing the "perhaps 5 nights" was in hopes that I would
cancel someone else's reservation to give them a room.
I let him know that all my rooms for this weekend have been
booked for about a year. He sounded surprised! Even rooms a hour
drive from the eclipse zone are hard to find, and some are
       priced at nearly $1000!
