Grandma Died

Grandma Died. Can we cancel tomorrow's reservation or what will
the cancellation fee be?
I am so sorry but I am going to have to charge you. I am a very
small business.
I understand, ahh, consider us as still coming. (A few minutes
later, he called to confirm they will be coming.)
This is my first Grandma died. Considering that I was
contemplating cancelling them (glad I did not now) I was not
going to cancel and not get paid. He booked a budget room (1
queen bed and smaller rooms) for 2 adults and 3 kids (I called a
few days ago to ask ages of kids - was considering putting 2
kids in another room N/C until I was told 3, 2, 9 months - so I
said I would make a pallet for the 2 older kids pac n play is up
for the baby.
A couple days ago I hauled my sleeping bag out of its storage,
out down egg crate foam mattress, and sheets. I will damned if I
was not going to charge him! I moved them into my biggest room
to accommodate them in the first place at no extra charge. Can
you tell I am miffed?

Good for you. You have a business to run, and you did not kill
grandma, I assume. As always, STICK TO YOUR CANCELLATION
POLICY! They see it and agree to it when they make their
reservation.
I've dealt with Hilton on a non-refundable reservation. They
stick to the deal, and so must we.

I move more and more towards the idea of charging online a week
in advance of a visit and providing a door code for those that
don't understand check in times.

I've always done that and almost everyone can follow the
instructions I send them to find their room and go on in. But I
had one last night that couldn't quite figure it out. She would
enter her code, then stand back and expect the door to just
swing open on it's own! No, you still have to turn the door
knob!!

Some folks do try your patience. I suppose I do have the
advantage of living onsite if someone isn't capable of operating
the lock. We put these locks on last summer so I'm still just
learning. Most of our folk's check-in at the office and get a
chip key that opens their door with a few requesting a late
arrival. Now that we are in the colder season of the year, we
have more young folks that come to ski and arrive late or desire
to check-in late after skiing. Not their fault, but I got old
too fast and can't keep my eyes open after about 9PM.

I've been self-check in only since 2013. You and the keypads can
handle it!
For better or worse, Air has helped with this. I have stayed at
dozens of Air places, and 100% of them have been keypad
self-check in. Air has trained a lot of people about how to do
this.
Regarding daily refreshing of rooms, since 2020 I've stayed at a
dozen Hilton and other upscale hotels and NONE of them offer
daily refreshing anymore, unless specifically requested. Most
people just want to be left alone.
The big hotels also still don't put scratch pads/pens in the
rooms anymore, or printed hotel directories of services. COVID
turned out to be a huge financial gift to hotels. They've
probably cut their staff and supply costs and laundry costs in
half, or better!
