Never hurts to ask, I guess. :-(

This afternoon I had a guest, booked for tonight and tomorrow
night, write to say, "I tested positive for COVID. Please refund
my first-night deposit."
Um, no, that's not the deal you agreed to when you booked. Short
notice means you pay 2 nights, per to the cancellation policy
you agreed to.
They think because it's COVID, or a funeral, it's special and of
course I will absorb 100% of the loss. NO! Not fair.
So I charged him for the first night, and let the second night
go. He was happy, of course. He should have paid 2 nights and
only paid one. He wins. I don't give full refund on a same-day
cancellation. I win. Hoping to rent it tomorrow night to someone
else, as I was completely booked and turned down a request, in
order to save the room for him.
Such is our life.

Agree. In 2020, we refunded for Covid. We also cancelled a
much anticipated vacation. So we were in both sides of the
issue.
In 2023, it is not my business why you need to cancel. I just
say, I’m so sorry, I hope you feel better soon.

That makes complete sense. While COVID still sucks, it’s not the
concern it was back in 2020. Would they say, “I got the flu
please cancel”? Probably not.
Frankly, I think you were very nice to let them cancel within 2
days. I’m guessing you have pretty good demand and people will
sometimes book with short notice. In the area we are looking,
bookings are typically a year out. While there are the
infrequent <1 month booking, the general rule is if it’s not
filled by 3 months ahead, it probably won’t fill. So most do a 7
day notice at least (some are actually a month.)
