       Sorry someone died, but...

Quite often people ask for a discount because they're coming to
town because a family member died suddenly. I'm sorry for their
loss, but no. Not fair that it's all on me to, basically, give
them money out of my pocket when nobody else in town gives them
       anything.
I guess it's because of the airlines, which do offer discounts
for such emergency situations. Good for them! But I have a small
business to run, and no end to expenses. My insurance premium,
       alone, would curl their toes.

I have a bereavement rate. It HAS brought business that would
have gone to a hotel instead. One lady, after hearing the
bereavement rate went from a 1-night to 4. AND it has been rare
that it was on a weekend or a busy time. During the BS year, I
got a family booking all 3 rooms when they came in to bury Dad.
They were here 3-nights AND left an extra green piece of paper
that featured a kite-flying patriot. I do raise it from time to
time to keep pace with expenses.

The bereavement discount rarely comes up -- not that we don't
get a lot of folks here for that reason, just that most consider
our rates pretty fair to begin with.
Shortly after opening, so more than 10 years ago, a couple had
to book one night for a several-day funeral stay; the cheap
motel just didn't have that one night they needed.
Wife complained, bitterly: "why do I have to pay $$(my rate)
when Motel X only charges ... Me: then you should be staying
with Motel X. She: they have no room, duh, nobody in the town
has a room, do you realize how many places I had to call before
I found you! Me: (trying not to face palm) I feel your pain.
I made her a sandwich snack, they had a good night sleep
(remember kids get cranky because hungry and tired) and later
learned that her main problem was that the funeral was for her
father-in-law who by all objective testimony was a real SOB. Fly
across the county, pay good money, listen to rosy-pink BS from
       family = not her.

Both points valid. But if it’s not a funeral, it’s cuz I’m a
senior, or was in the army, or was born in this town, or have
       auto insurance.
We are a small business and life will bring you many funerals.
It is sad, but has no correlation to my product for sale.

There is a funeral home across the street (unfortunately they do
not send people - excuse: by the time people call us they have
made their arrangements). I look at it as you do not plan for a
funeral (and in case folks were bot aware, Holiday Inn gives a
funeral rate if you tell them you are coming for a funeral - I
was given that rate once) and it usually happens when you can
       least afford it.
I figure once they see how great we are, they will come here
next time they are visiting - it HAS happened. The only other
discount I give is to Military, Police, and Fire. All others get
told, "we keep our rates as low as we can and still be able to
be here for you to be able to stay with us.

No one has ever asked. And each year people do stay for that
reason. I'm usually asked for AAA or military. I just tell
them the truth. One rate makes it easier on this chief cook and
bottle washer and maid-of-all-work - and bookkeeper!
