I Saw This Rate....
By: Generic Date: August 17, 2023, 10:57 am

I get a message...
I was looking on X website and it says your prices are
from $69 to $89.

Well, that's nice, but we aren't a member of X website
and haven't been for a while. Those rate say "from" and indicate
the lowest rate, in the dead of winter and not for the room that
you are asking for.
So, what is the rate they are balking at... I'm $240 a night.
So, I look to see what's within a 5 km distance from downtown
that has a decent rating (7/10 or more) pricewise and includes
breakfast. I found a private room with private bath for $208 at
the hostel. I found a hotel for $203 a night as well. Neither is
a place that I would stay at. But hey, it's not me!
But I have to be honest... what I really wanted to tell him is
that the last time that room was that price in the summer, was
2009
I gave him a list of places all "NOT RECOMMENDED" that might be
closer to his price range. And I stressed... "NOT RECOMMENDED".
It's a list of places so bad, that I'm still not sure if I would
prefer to stay in the homeless shelter. Does anyone else get
these inquiries?

Yes. Similar answer. I say, we don’t have a contract with
them, they publish numbers designed to get you to use them.
Our rates are good for our area.
I did take $40 off once for a couple that found some way back
super secret page on our website with last years rates on it.
They had already paid for their stay and showed me the web page
on day two asking for a refund. I didn’t look at them or
speak to them for the rest of their stay.
I had to admit, that price was on our website, but they knew it
was a mistake and took advantage.

Of course. Their version of "gotcha." At least it let you know
that page was there and needed to be removed before someone else
found it!

I had a repeat guest who found an old package that included a
dinner. I honored it and they told me where it was. I thought I
had removed ALL references of dinners other than my
Thanksgiving. Trying to decide if I am going to offer it again.
It IS a horrendous amount of work but that one package will pay
my expenses for the next month.

My sister, who's about to turn 81, has become a master at doing
meals an easier way! Still cooking from scratch, keeping the
quality high, but making things easier on herself. Maybe you can
come up with a few corners to cut while keeping things at a high
level. Good luck!

For Thanksgiving I am grateful for crockpots & liners. I have an
18-quart roaster and the stuffed turkey goes in a roasting bag
in it first thing in the morning - leaving the oven available
for the sweet potatoes, baked potatoes, scalloped corn, & rolls.
Before I go to bed the night begore, the 2 crockpots get their
liners and the pork roast goes in one and the venison roast goes
in the other - on low. I have a refrigerator rolls recipe that I
make the day before so I just have to shape & bake, The
cranberry sauce is made the day before as well as the pumpkin
pie. Doing things in stages is not the killer Thanksgiving used
to be.
I think the worst part is doing the dishes - not just the place
settings, but the serving dishes, and the thankfully few pots &
pans. (AND finding places for the leftovers in the fridge) Trust
me, IF there is an easier way, I most likely found it. That is
why I bake everything for breakfasts - once the muffins (and
bacon if it is a bacon morning) are baked, everything else goes
in the oven at the same time.

I am a big fan of crockpots! Must admit, I’ve never cooked a
whole roast meat in one, but I will explore that this winter!
I have a make ahead gravy that saves lots of stress.
What takes the longest to clean us is the wine glasses.
Between cocktail hour and dinner, there can be dozens of them.
But the dining room is separate, so no buggy if they sit
overnight.

When I do the roast in the crockpot, it also has the potatoes,
carrots, onion, and of course a bit of wine poured over it.
Falling apart tender with the veggies to surround it on the
platter.

We went from rates to crockpots .. a good trend.
A few nights ago, I prepared confit de canard in the crockpot.
Duck legs, a bit of salt and herbs overnight then in the
crockpot covered with duck fat, on low for 6 hours. Tender!
As for the old rates, I probably would have said, old rates,
current rates are on the booking site and that's what you
received in confirmation.

We tried that. They insisted since it was published, we
should honor it. Since, we obviously erased it, but also added
a line saying, rates are subject to change.
