School Starting...kind of amazing
By: Arks Date: August 12, 2023, 4:34 pm

I had a very busy summer, right up until now. But school starts
back up Monday, and sadly I only have like 2 reservations in the
next two weeks! I'm sure a few more will trickle in, but it's
quite amazing how much the school start seems to impact
reservations, at least here in the middle of nowhere.

As of now, I have 7 room-nights booked for the rest of August
and 1 night each in Sept & Oct which vould easily change between
now and then. Looks as if I will be busier than I planned to be.
I might even post the Thanksgiving package this year instead of
waiting to see if anyone calls about it (that happened the last
2 years in a row when I was NOT planning to do it!). Thursday I
have a GF coming in for 3-nights.

I have 4 room nights left to sell for all of August. That's all
folks! And just 55 room nights left to sell for all of
September. It doesn't really slow down until the end of October,
around here. Though there is usually a lull from after Labour
day until our Thanksgiving... a period that I traditionally
dislike because we get a lot of needier people (The same people
that think that historic homes should have elevators in them).
But we won't make it until the end of October, because we leave
on vacation in late October and we will be back Mid-November. In
fact, because of our 6 month rolling calendar, I've had to block
out things for holidays already into next year.... September
means that March is opening soon.

I am too old to work that hard. I get "enough". I have enough to
pay the bills and some extra, not chasing dollars any more
except times when my son waves "take it". It meant getting up at
5:30 to make breakfast after a short night. It was all good -
enjoyed his visit and carching up with him and his wife over the
years.

My property tax bill is over $1K a month. And I'm still a little
younger than you :)
I can't get a regular housekeeper though. They all want 4 hours
and more money. So it's more irregular now. But this also means
that I get to keep more money. But yes, we work a lot. Which is
why we take more vacations than most people.

I get a Homestead Exemption on my 1/3 of the house - tax starts
when valuation hits 20,001. I got hit with tax on my portion
this ear- 1.40 for the YEAR!! That plus my car personal
property), the 2/3 that is B & B, and personal property &
supplies of the B & B (I have to file all in-house as of July 1
AND my Schedule C from Fed Tax) & they divide by 12 I guess.
TOTAL due for this year was under $1200. I paid the half year
because if I wait until Jan 1, 2024 to pay second half, I will
get a rebate on the second half of my vehicle tax (the car is
so old, it will be chump change, but MY chump change!) Real
Estate tax in West Virginia is reasonable. Income tax went down
this year also.
