       Drawing the line on amenities
By: Arks Date: July 21, 2023, 5:29 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
When I started, 10+ years ago, I added every amenity I could
think of. I've proceeded to cut out one after another over the
years. My housekeepers just don't have time to replenish that
much stuff. We used to provide some fast food style ketchup and
hot sauce, disposable plates and plastic cutlery sets, etc. etc.
etc. I've eliminated all that. We're back to basics. Bar of
soap, vanity kit, shower cap, small bottle of lotion, and ladies
hygiene whatever in the bathroom. Keurig coffee pods, Coffeemate
"pods" in the bedrooms. I used to also offer mini-moos (half and
half), french vanilla creamer, and hazelnut creamers, but found
their shelf life is way less than works for me.
So, anyway, I'm just wondering what's the most ridiculous
request you've had for an added amenity. My most extreme request
was from an English woman who picked my place as their first
stop in USA. I assume they landed in nearby Memphis and drove
here to start their American adventure.
She first complained that I only provided regular tea bags and
she wanted something I can't even buy here. She went on to be
SHOCKED that she had to draw her tea water from the bathroom
faucet. I guess in England all hotels also provide a water tap
in the bedroom. I'd love to know how the rest of her US vacation
went. I thought the British were able to rough it in the
       colonies.

OK, I'll add that one woman wanted me to jackhammer out the
concrete entry to my parking lot, to make it more "gentle." NOT
       GONNA HAPPEN!!

I had a woman require that I make the bed in front of her. I
did, but if it were to happen again, I would refuse and offer an
       immediate refund.
I had another woman require that we vacuum up “the dust bunnies”
under the bed. I was mortified and immediately went to clean
under the bed. I found zero dust bunnies. No dust, no fuzz,
no crumbs. Just a paranoid woman.
Most people who are picky about their tea have learned to bring
       their favorite with them.

People/guests can be entertaining, I attempt to appear agreeable
       and laugh a bit later.
We provide, small fridge, microwave, K-cup style coffee in
rooms, selection of coffee pods, cups, packets containing sugar,
sweetener, and creamer. Several colas on the shelf and bags of
ice in freezer outside of office. Bath has lotion, shower gel,
shampoo, conditioner, soaps and makeup wipes. Hair dryer in the
room. Iron, ironing board, eating utensils can be available on
request. Beds and TV cabinet go to the floor, nothing to dust
       underneath.
Strange suggestions: We should paint the outside brick cream
color with aqua trim, nah I'll pass. We really need to limit
pictures and paint all the walls gray and get grey carpet, nope,
you're visiting grandma, if chrome and glass is desired, I'm the
wrong place. Room is too bright, next guest says same room is
too dark and we need to supply nightlights.
Reasonable suggestions, a table between the chairs, desk/table
for work, more shelves in bathrooms. While I don't disagree,
some rooms offer those items, just not the one the guest chose
and some properties do offer more, but at a higher price. Some
of these go along with the potential guest who says, "you have
the best price in town" and then asks about discounts. Price is
good for a reason; I didn't attempt to take advantage of you,
       but no further discounts.

I have unscented soaps (made by my niece) in the bathrooms in
the showers and by the tub. Pump mottles of hand soap at the
sinks. Shampoo in a pump bottle in one shower & in dispenser in
the other. I have bubble bath in the bathroom with claw-foot tub
and bottles of lotion. There are individually wrapped plastic
glasses in each bathroom. I have a refrigerator (original left
behind by a pipeliner guest - since replaced with one that also
has a freezer compartment) with bottles of water in it and a
nuker on top of it. There is a reservoir of hot water for tea
and a Keurig in the dining room available any time. There are
about 50 varieties of tea and several kinds of k-pods available.
Of course there is TV and Wifi.

YES! Bring your own! Or go to a local store. Don't assume
unusual stuff will be provided for you.

YES! I'd say most guest suggestions are reasonable and I take
most of them. It's the crazy unreasonable ones that make me
laugh. People continue to amaze me.

I suppose the business looks easy to the guest, we just sit
around and take their money. They can only see their ideas and
don't have to consider the conflicting ideas of the next guest
or the cost of the ideas.

OMG! I just refused someone who didn't want to the check-in.
If they ask me to make the bed in front of them, they are OUT of
here. I personally make all the beds. I know that they are
clean. I also personally wash the sheets. It's insulting!

Yes, quite insulting. I wouldn't do it either.
