"Something's wrong with your website."

It happens pretty often: People contacting me assuming the
website is broken because it shows no availability.
I don't know if they really can't believe I'm booked up in the
middle of summer, or if I'll magically find an empty room
somewhere that I'd never noticed before.
For me, part of the fun of traveling is locating and booking a
place to stay weeks before I travel. I'm amazed at how many
people still arrive in town then start looking for a room. That
was common before the Internet came along, but can't believe
it's still "a thing." It guarantees that those people will end
up in the least desirable rooms in town, since the nicer, or
cheaper, ones go first. I guess they don't care where they lay
their head.

Brings back memories of August 1986 when his royal highness
decided 6 PM was too early to stop for the night - so we slept
in a 5 passenger Jeep with 4 kids (one over 6 ft tall and the 2
shortest kids were 5'3" (in Albany at 6 PM - near Ft
Ticonderoga when we gave up at 1 AM and puuled to the side of
the road).
Wednesday at 11:15 PM I had a call wanting a room - NOPE not
happening.

I'm afraid I'd have to say guilty as charged. Never had the kind
of job that allowed much in the way of advance planning. Pre
cell phone days I never knew for sure that I was free to take
vacation till I was a hundred miles down the road and out of
touch till I returned home. Stopping for the night meant
reaching the point that I couldn't drive any further, and yes,
I've stayed in a few dives. These days I would attempt to plan a
bit better, yet the plan is usually that it is easier to just
stay home.

We took a family trip up that way about 1982, but in leaf
peeping season, also not a good time to go without prior
reservations, but we lucked out and found BnBs that could
accommodate us each night. First time I'd ever stayed at a BnB
and I was impressed.
We drove to see Ticonderoga but the gates were locked. The sign
said, "Closed for the season as of..." and listed 2 days before
we got there. Another case of poor planning pre-Internet!

Had not planned it that way as I had no idea about the event
(the 3 days we stayed in Ohio because my Dad was in ICU delayed
us - to explain, he did not die and was not gooperating so I
gave license number and itinerary and we proceeded with the
trip). We happened to arrive at Fort ticonderoga on the DAY of
the BAR reenactment of the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga. Having
figured the kids would be restless after a half day, I said ok,
let's move on and they said NO WAY. We were on the battlements
looking down at everythung - in the catbird seat!
