I am done for today. Had to sit at City Hall from 9 til noon
today for anyone doing a last minute filing for City Council -
there was 1. I have been boiling a small pot of water and
pouring iy down the drain - let it cool, bail out the sink and
repeat. Will try again tomorrow. The waterlines are fine - the
drain is iced and only in the kitchen.
I was out of bread so between pots boiling I made a loaf of
English Muffin bread - quick & easy - since I was out of bread.
I am fortunate enough to live a block from City Hall in one
direction and a block from Council Chambers and the Library. I
am not standing in this horrible cold to clean off my car. WITH
the walker my daughter got for me last summer, I have been able
to walk to those places faster than I could dig out the car. My
finger tips did not even start tingling today or Monday night
going to Council meeting.
It is currently a balmy 8F and will only go down to 2F tonight.

Glad you have that walker! I'm in Little Rock right now and the
sidewalks are still an ice rink. Only the main streets are
clear. Side streets are packed sleet and snow. These southern
towns aren't set up to handle ice and snow.

They DO help the power company - a lot!
Got my electric bill today. It made my eyes water! these single
digits temps got me this month and next month will not be any
better since they are sticking around into February.
Last year the bill was $330.23 the bill that arrived today is
for $482.44.

When we bought this house, the lady had horrible inefficient
heating. Natural gas. We changed to an efficient boiler (97%),
added a little electric heat in a few places and installed
insulation. Insulation on the roof is so good that people on the
top floor complain it gets too warm.
She was paying over $6K a YEAR to heat this house... 15 years
ago

I have forced air gas on the first floor and electric baseboard
heaters upstairs in guest territory. Heat & A/C are on
(appropriate seasons) only when guests are in-house and during
stupid horrible cold ala now in the bathrooms to avoid burst
waterlines. Normally not a problem as we usually only get single
digit temps a few nights a winter. This year it is a few weeks
of sustained low temps that created the problem. I will go back
to 66 on the thermostat when we get back to normal - I upped it
to 68 for now.
The 2024 fiasco with the gas lines created the kitchen problem
when the gas line was rerouted and eliminated the gas heaters in
the kitchen and MY bathroom. Adding insulation now is well
beyond my financial condition. The previous owners had
insulation "blown-in" to the north wall of the house - which has
settled so I assume that means the first floor is still
insulated. It will have to wait until I die and my daughter
remodels the kitchen and my bathroom before she sells the house
(the kitchen floor will be torn up them (it is a solid floor
now, I know because Himself had the floor in our bathroom torn
up when the kids remodeled it about 10 years ago because the
joists MUST be rotted by now) - they weren't - so now that
sub-floor is thick plywood.

Hope you all thawed out!
Here in Oregon the winter has been mild -- not like January 2024
when we had a massive ice storm. Brought down half the trees,
power out for 14 days, blocked our road in both directions for 5
days, and we had guests trapped! The stayed in the great room by
the fire and I fed them. One couple with a then 5-month-old baby
has returned several times for a more civilized stay.
