Blizzards don't seem to help business...
By: Arks Date: January 23, 2026, 4:11 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
We're predicted to have up to 2 feet of snow between Friday
night and Sunday morning. Of course, every reservation for the
next week has already cancelled, except one, and they probably
       just haven't contacted me yet.
With temperatures predicted before zero F for a couple of days,
it's not going to melt anytime soon. Glad I have a little money
       saved up in the bank!
I guess our Canadian brothers and sisters are laughing at
everybody cancelling at 2' snow and sub-zero temps, but some
people here are seriously expecting to be dead soon! The grocery
stores have been packed all week, and the shelves are almost as
empty as in the early COVID days.
South of us is predicted to have up to 1.5 inches of freezing
rain/ice! That will break every tree limb and power line across
a huge swath of country. Horrible for the people down there.
Where I am, with the zero temperatures it should be a dry snow
that blows off the trees, rather than a wet one that weighs down
limbs and breaks them, bringing down power lines. So I think
we're fine here...just won't be getting out of the house for a
       few days!

It hasn't started here - YET! Snow - per the weather app is
supposed to start around 1 AM, then as the temp reaches around
20 F I think it is showing rain which should leave a nice layer
of ice on the roads. I am scheduled to leave here tomorrow
around 8 am (temp is supposed to be about 25 by then) to go 130
miles south to our State Capital for a Municipal League
Conference. Mayor, City Manager, and 2 other from Council have
cancelled. BUT the last Councilman scheduled to go says he is
not bothered by the weather report so we are going (he is my
       passenger).
Another tidbit of interest is that into the wee hours of Monday
morning (while I am still 130 miles away) the temps will go BACK
to single digits where they will stay for the next week plus. I
hope to have a disgustingly large water bill because 4 sinks, 2
bathtubs, 2 showers with FAST drip going and I will not be here
to keep starting the washer as I did last night when it dipped
       to 2 F (it is a balmy 16 F currently).
I will update on Monday evening when I get home (I hope) if I do
not go "slip sliding away". (We are supposed to get 8 to 10
inches of snow. Perhaps I will get lucky and not be able to get
out of my driveway (I think I am starting to get a bit cautious
in my old age. Never expected THAT to happen.)

I'd prefer the snow, yet we seem to have a greater chance of ice
in our area. Too much of either chase visitors away and add to
the expense of running heat to keep pipes from freezing. Having
moved here from a warmer climate there was a time when I looked
forward to playing in the snow, age/energy does change a
person's outlook. If I were stuck somewhere I would be concerned
       I couldn't hike to safety.

I had 6 inches on the ground and it was still snowing when we
left yesterday. Since we SENSIBLY never went of 40 mph on the
Interstate gong to Charleston, it took us about 4 hours to get
there (my usual "flying low" it takes a tad over 90 minutes.
They canceled the Capitol today. BOTH Houses did not hold
sessions today, so we came home - were up to about 60 mph at
times coming home. Still a bit icy in spots but mostly just wet
or wet/slushy today )I would not want to be on it after sundown
and the temps go down again (it is 15F in Shinnston currently -
expected to go down to 2F tonight.
So I am home safely. (fingertips got a tad of frostbite again in
Charleston but within 30 minutes were OK again)

WIMPS... not a single reservation cancelled. They had an outdoor
party at -30c on Friday night around here.

I picked up 3 reservations from people down south, where the ice
storms hit, fleeing north to a place that just has snow. After
the snowing finally stopped, the city and state got busy and all
the highways and city states are cleared and drive-able, though
the city streets are just one lane down the middle, so it's a
bit iffy if you meet someone coming the other way.
Weather permitting, I leave Saturday for Los Angeles, where the
predicted high is 73F. I guess I can adjust to that.

       Generic - I admit to developing a case of "whimp-i-docious" a
year after returning to West Virginia from the burbs of Chicago.
Our normal lows of teens & twenties are wonderful compared to
the temps there. it is predicted to be 18F tonight when I have
to go to the City Council meeting. I do not complain about temps
in the 30s or even the 20s - it IS winter - but single digits
belong in northern Ohio and east & west of there.
There is a ridge just south of Morgantown (45 minutes north of
me) that usually keeps Chicago weather up there (growing up in
the northern panhandle, we got Chicago weather 3 days later.
Arks enjoy the 73 degrees - that will cool compared to your
       summers.

They DO help the power company - a lot!
Got my electric bill today. It made my eyes water! these single
digits temps got me this month and next month will not be any
better since they are sticking around into February.
Last year the bill was $330.23 the bill that arrived today is
       for $482.44.

Had down to 2 for about 5 hours the wee hours this morning.
Waterlines did not freeze but my kitchen sink drain did. have a
heater under ti sink now trying to get it running. Poured some
Kosher salt into the drain hoping that will help melt the ice.
Had to turn off the drip, I do not want the sinks spilling onto
the kitchen floor. the HIGH WILL NOT HIT 32 UNTIL Tuesday.
Tonight will be single digits from 11 PM until 11 AM tomorrow.
       sigh

The difficult part is while it may be warm under the sink with
the heater that pipe has to go further, it is possible that you
freeze or blockage is further down the line. Hope you found
       success.
