Christmas Concerts
By: gillumhouse Date: December 8, 2025, 11:02 am

Two down and one to go. Saturday night was the Shinnston
Christmas Parade followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree
and then everyone went to the Lighthouse (largest space in
town)for the Community Band Concert. Then yesterday afternoon we
performed at the restored Robinson Grand Theater in Clarksburg.
One more to go - Saturday at 3 in Salem, West Virginia (abo0ut
25 miles from my house).
In April we will start rehearsals for the July 1 Independence
Concert. I am one of 4 who have been with the Band since it
started in 1996.
(I am the one with the sleigh bells)

Our final concert for December 13 was cancelled Friday due to
the nasty weather predicted. It was a good call. By the time the
concert would have ended, it would have been dark. I doubt if
many from that town would have come out AND our band members
would have had some long drives (about 30 miles for me) on snaky
2-lane roads just to get to the 4-lane to that town.
We had about 5 inches of snow that is not a big deal here EXCEPT
it came after rain and cold that created ice. No one has control
on ice, and it would have been snowing as we came home making
visibility BAD! Temps starting at Midnight tonight (Sunday) are
expected to go into single digits meaning I will be on
all-nighter duty trying to keep my waterlines from freezing - an
every winter occurrence - for those who are unaware, my
waterlines come into the house UNDER my kitchen floor that was
originally the back porch until about 1952 - before heat tape
and with NO accessible way to rectify it - SHALLOW crawl space.
All is well until the several times each winter we get single
digit temps (normal lows are 20s and high teens). Tomorrow and
Tuesday mornings I will have the cleanest laundry in town as
that same washer load will be started many times during the next
2 nights to draw water better than the dripping faucets in
kitchen and all 3 bathrooms. And the electric company is going
to LOVE me as extra heaters will be on since I no longer have
gas to my kitchen and MY bathroom space heaters. SIGH!

For years now, I've turned the central heating way down and used
an electric "tower heater" a few feet from my recliner. A lot
cheaper than heating the whole house, I would think. I
supplement with a lap blanket as needed.
And in summer I keep a small fan on the table by my chair rather
than cooling the whole house. All this probably saves me two
hundred dollars/year, which, for a son of frugal Depression Era
parents, is money will earned.

It went down to 3 F for several hours this morning - water is
still flowing - yea. Did not add a second heater in the kitchen
but DID run the washer several times.
The beauty of this house is that since gas was cheap in 1912,
each room had a gas fireplace for heat. We have disconnected the
gas in every room upstairs and installed electric baseboard
heaters in every room - turned on ONLY when guests are in-house
EXCEPT the 2 bathrooms in winter when temp is predicted 20 or
below. All doors are closed to keep the cold IN those rooms as
much as possible. When we replaced the furnace, Himself wanted
central air (I do not like it but it is what it is) and since
there is no ductwork on the second floor (guest territory) it
was cheaper to install window units in each guest room - again
ON ONLY when guests will be here. I rarely turn the A/C on in
summer. I set the thermostat downstairs UP this year (I am
getting older and colder) to 66 F. The kitchen and my office
each have one of those oil-filled heaters - the kitchen is
chilly, but it seems to be enough (sink doors open and heater
facing).
This is an uninsulated house but it does compartmentalize nicely
year round. fortunately, we do not get many Artic blasts like
this weekend very often. In summer, the house is usually about
10 degrees cooler than outside - a blessing.
