Airbnb guest says images were altered in false £12,000 damage cl

An Air BnB host, angry that a long-stay guest left early,
apparently digitally altered photos to show damage that didn't
really exist. Article HERE

It really is not funny however it tickled my funny bone that an
AIR got caught for manipulation OR that a guest is being mailed
for damages. Forensics can prove/disprove image altering. AIR
has damaged so many legal B & Bs and has the world thinking that
THEY are us. What I hate most is that people think I am just
another AIR, a monomer I immediately correct.
Guilty - I should have read the article first. BUT stunts like
this DO damage us because people think a B & B is AIR.
Innkeepers from all over the world on one of the groups on FB
are saying reservations are down. I wonder how much of that can
be attributed to the bad publicity about AIR ( dirty, sneaky
charges, hidden cameras, etc.). I cannot count the number of
times I read (or heard) "I will never stay at another B & B
because,,," but no matter how bad a stay was at a hotel, they go
to another hotel.

Some rotten apples on both sides I would expect.
How does one determine if damage is the result of some improper
activity or just an accident? Shouldn't an accident be part of
the cost of doing business? We all have accidents at times.
My gripe with Air and the rideshare programs is the ability to
avoid rules and costs that seem to apply to everyone else, or do
we have too many rules?
I don't think it is just B & B's that are experiencing slow
bookings. July wasn't bad but much of the spring it was obvious
that there just wasn't as much traffic around town. All costs
seem to be up and still rising so it pinches when guests don't
travel.

I was saved by a long-term. He said his camper should be ready
for pick up in a few weeks. Sigh. Another month would have been
nice. I am heading into my expensive season" real estate taxes,
car insurance, followed by B & B insurance -and then it is
winter, the season of no guests an soaring utility bills.
My 2-night for this past weekend canceled so I was available to
help with the Woman's Club Rummage Sale. I have a 3-night at the
end of the month that will help. I HAVE had a slower than usual
summer.

Yes, slower here too. The word here in the NE is that Canadians
are not visiting USA this year. Innkeepers in ME are especially
impacted but I suspect the end results dribble down your way as
well.

Yes, I've seen lots of articles that show Canadians are
vacationing in Europe or within Canada this year. Their travel
to USA is down by almost 50%. It may be like this for a few
years. So sad, so bad. So unnecessary. Self-inflicted damage,
and to what purpose?

It might be true in the other direction also - more Americans
are vacationing in USA.
I post comments on a travel writer's page frequently - re hotels
and AIR re safety, hospitality, etc. - book legal Bed &
Breakfasts. Re the question of cancellations & refunds - contact
the Tourism Division of States not often mentioned like North &
South Dakota, West Virginia, Nebraska, Kansas and discover what
can be found in our vast territory. People are not going to
Europe like they have in the past.

We have occasionally had guests from Canada visit, nice folks,
yet not such a volume of guests that would show on the bottom
line. On other groups I see operators in Europe also saying
business is slower this year.
Our area flooded last fall, fortunately we didn't have damage on
an individual level. Looking around the country, many areas have
had some sort of disasters. I expect the associated costs cut in
to folks travel budgets. I view most of our guests as everyday
folks, perhaps hit harder budget wise than others. Summer for us
has been cooler and wet. Frequent rain showers work against
summer outdoor activities.

Weather has not been in our favor either. Our normal summer
temps are low to mid 80s but this summer there is a heat wave
all across the country, WE have had a week or more at a time of
in the 90s and when we were not frying, we had rain. Some days
we would have a gulley washer for an hour, then beautiful sun
for a couple hours followed by another gully washer. All the
rain caused slips (mud & rock slides) on our rail-trail and on a
couple of the roads that closed the trail just out of town. The
heat wave around the country ate into discretionary funds to pay
he electric bill for the A/C.
I am starting to get reservations for the Fall - a returning WVU
football fan, the flea market is back (drive-in closed, County
Commission bought the property, demolished everything but IS
bringing back the flea market for a couple months - popular
demand) and some returning guests (off & on for 20 yeas now)
have said they need a Kathleen visit, Also have my first B & Bs
For Vets reservation.
