The new model is working!

We are on guest couple #5 of our new “check yourself in/check
yourself out/don’t bother me/get your own breakfast” business
model. It is working! We currently have a couple here who
has stayed with us several times. Twice a year for most of the
years we have been here. We caught them in the driveway and
asked how it is. They actually prefer the outside stairs entry
to the in the house stairs! They understand why we are
charging for fresh laundry as the room price is significantly
lower than before.
As for us, it is so easy and my stress level is down after
hearing they like the outside stairs. (Rooms are on the third
floor so it is two flights up with a small landing in between
flights.)

We have been self-check-in since COVID and haven't looked back.
Still do breakfast. But no longer have to be there for hours
waiting for them to not show up

Glad it's working well for you! Now you get to have our own
life, and still have an income.

Exactly! No longer confines to quarters for 23 of 24 hours a
day!

Congratulations on making the transition! You can continue this
model well into "old age"!

I fell almost 2 weeks ago doing something stupid - like talking
as I walked down my front steps. Concrete is HARD! this was
right after 4 rough on back days (2 traveling back & forth and 2
racing through Congressional Office buildings) in DC and coming
home to a 1-night, flip and full house. I went to band rehearsal
that night. Had another guest (DID actually get smart and now
have a cleaner - woohoo!). Rested again over Memorial weekend
but then had Council meeting Tuesday and Rail-Trail meeting with
guests) at our newest shelter on the trail (rough terrain
between parking at edge of trail and the shelter) so I am back
to square one - almost.
Now waiting for a long-term guest to arrive. It is a good thing
he saw me before the crap hit the fan, because a robe is NOT the
normal meeting a guest attire. As soon as I tell him a few
options I am going to give him about furnishings in the room
(big rocker stay or go? - if go can replace with a small table
in that space. things like that) I am going back to BED to
stretch my back some more - it seems to be helping. Not spending
much tome at the computer cuz sitting does not help the back.
I still plan to greet guests but unless something changes (like
going back to being ME) will not be going upstairs. Adults
should be able to find light switches and the A/C.
I knew this day would arrive, but did not expect it so soon.
Start year #29 in July.

Miss K,
Falling isn't fun, hope healing comes quickly. I tried that
several years ago, running my mouth and forgot the last few
steps on the ladder, driveway came up rather quickly.
Since Covid, cards are mostly charged in advance and check in is
not much more than signing the registration sheet at the door
since our rooms are all external. Evening arrivals can laugh at
my colorful bathrobe if they desire.

Thank you, JimBoone. I am working on it. Trying to not spend too
much time sitting at the computer, sitting does NOT help my
back. Decided it is time to stop acting like a whiney nevermind
so I DO plan to go out soon. No choice tonight - garbage night
with 2 weeks worth to go to the curb! UGH!

Wow, what a report! Glad it wasn't worse, but it's a good thing
to give some thought to how you can cut back on some things
without making a big difference to the overall guest experience.
You've earned the right to cut a few corners when you need to!
