OK, Gillum, I have manned up!

I've booked a 7 night cruise on Queen Mary 2, NYC to
Southampton, UK, in mid June. I'll then rent a car in
Southampton and spend 6 nights wandering UK, and visiting the
village where my ancestor departed for America about year 1600.
Despite politics, I'll hope and depend on Brits being almost as
polite as Canadians. :)
After UK, I'll head to Stockholm for a few days with my two
Swedish "sons." I hosted one as an exchange student 1993-94 and
another 1994-95. One of them even named his first son after me!
The other one apologized that his wife overruled him and named
their son Alvar. Poor kid.

I LOVE it!!! You will have a wonderful trip! Just be careful
driving on the wrong side of the road. Other than that, you will
be fine. I know you and you will be a wonderful guest on your
travels.
On my maternal side (the paternal) the fist across the Pond
touched this side in 1630. Farther down the line still maternal
(but also maternal) my great-grandfather was from Sweden. I got
to go to Stockholm in 2017. IF in Stockholm go see the Vasa - it
is awesome!!

Sweden is expensive. I'm trying to remember where we went that
they did rosemåling on EVERYTHING. I think it's Dalarna. Even
the toilet seat was painted. And the town even had a "may pole"
in the centre.
The British are NOT the same as Canadians. They are a bit less
polite, but pull up a pint and things will be fine :) Easier for
us... sense of humour is the same, even if the language isn't.

I've driven in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland a few times.
Never had a problem with it, but I was younger then. We'll see!
The fact that the steering wheel is on the right helps me
remember that "I'm not in Kansas anymore."

Both my former exchange students live in Stockholm now, and
they've taken me to see the Vasa a couple of times, and Skansen
HTML https://skansen.se/en/,
a wonderful open air museum where
they're moved old Swedish buildings from all over the country
and gathered them in a huge park.

Oh yes, I well know! It helps to know some locals. Swedes are
very good at saving money where they can. The first time I
gassed up my car after I picked up the exchange student at the
airport, when I finished he ran and lifted the hose from the
pump to the car, to get every last drop of gas out of the hose!

Every town in Sweden has the poles, and they do dance around
them at their midsummer festivals. My first exchange student was
from Dalarna. It's known for the traditional Swedish lifestyle
and Swedish folklore. When I visited Dalarna during midsummer
festival one time, the father of my old exchange student,
speaking of the may pole, said, "It stands for the part of the
man." I knew what he meant. It's a fertility symbol!
My second Swede laughed at the accent of the one from Dalarna,
saying, "He sounds like Santa Claus people!"
