Streaming or Cable...
By: Arks Date: January 6, 2025, 5:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
For 11 years I've paid a small monthly fortune to offer HBO and
500 channels via cable TV.
I tried also offering streaming via Roku, but that lead to
frequent situations where old people couldn't watch TV because
they couldn't switch TV input between the cable box and the Roku
the last guest had used.
So a year ago I eliminated the Roku and went cable only. No
problem until a couple of weeks ago.
In the last 2 weeks I've had two complaints about no streaming.
One was so insulting as to say that cable TV is for Motel 6.
But I know if I cut off the cable, saving me hundreds/month,
I'll be getting complaints from people who don't know how to
find their programs on the Internet.
How are YOU doing it?

We would be those old people that couldn't find their favorite
programs on the internet. Mostly the TV makes the wife happy,
she controls the remote. If we want to break the routine it is
an adventure trying to remember how we made the swap the last
time to watch something different or play music.
Guest rooms have satellite TV with a decent variety of choices,
they are also smart TVs, but the guest doesn't have the option
of switching the input. As a general rule we haven't had
complaints, perhaps we are not "high class" enough to draw
complaints.
I figure there are always those few that know everything about
how you should run your business "to suit them" as they don't
have to worry about pleasing anyone else. I operate on the basis
of doing things to suit me and cultivating guests that like my
way as we can't please everyone.

After you clean the room, as part of the housekeeping checklist,
set the TV to CBS.

I have a smart TV in the king room and in the Library. A friend
hooked up a firestick to the TV in one of the shared rooms. The
third TV is just cable. I have Basic Plus Cable - no HBO etc. I
got what I have so His Highness could watch all his sports,
motorcycle races, etc. and just never got around to doing
anything else. I pay almost $150 per month - and I do not watch
TV! I set it to the weather channel when I flip the rooms. I
have spent way too much time trying to restore the TV (king
room) to be TV and the long-term had the TV in her room so
messed up that my friend could not get things back to normal
(the TV with HER firestick that she gave me). My Veterans got
the TV back to what it should be I think. So far, I have not had
any complaints ab9out TV.
Arks - I think the problem you are having with TV is too many
choices. Go down to whatever will give you all the ESPNs/sports
& News and do not worry about movies and whatever. I know I
probably have about 100 channels (many are just duplicates in
hi-def I think).

The problem I'm having is them wanting MORE choices. Not just
the 350 cable channels I have now, but they also want to stream
Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.
Things like Roku and Fire Stick and streaming You Tube and
Netflix are fine for a person's home TV, where you've learned to
use it. But they are too confusing for people arriving for one
or two nights and have never "switched inputs" and streamed
before. They end up getting everything screwed up royally.
My cable TV remotes are as simple as can be: On/Off button,
Volume up/down button, and Channel up/down button. I NEVER hear
from anyone who can't work the TV.
My problem is people now wanting me to add more complications,
more options, and I'm not going to do it! They can do their
streaming on their phone or laptop!

Poor babies. They can pound salt. You already offer more than
the hotels do.

Every guest knows exactly how the hotel should be operated [to
please them], as they don't have the problem of pleasing the
next guest or details like earning a profit.
Switching inputs: way, way back, before the digital age, I had a
physical box with 3 or 4 labeled buttons, Tv, VCR, Music, Optin
4, simpler back in the dark ages.

For several years we offered both streaming and cable channels.
We always provide detailed instructions about operating the
remotes. Like you, we got tired of paying the cable bill and
guests having trouble navigating the remotes. Several years ago
we cut the cable but kept the Roku with an app for our TV
provider on the Roku and a subscription for both Netflix and
Prime…still expensive but less complicated with only the Roku to
navigate. This year we decided to totally ditch our TV
subscription suggesting that guests who want to watch tv locate
the app on the Roku for their own tv provider and sign in with
their own password. We don’t ever watch tv so it’s not a
problem for us and will save us $1,000 a year.

We are streaming only. We have IPTV, so the TV channels come in
via a streaming service.
Unfortunately, having American streaming services has become
political around here. So we may disconnect our Netflix and
Prime accounts and let people sign in with their own account
instead.

I'd recommend that. Everything. EVERYTHING is political now.
