Flying South!
By: Arks Date: January 6, 2025, 1:42 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Today, here in northern Arkansas, it's currently 28F/-2C, and
this will be our warmest day of the week!
So Thursday I head to Memphis, trying to stay ahead of the
predicted snow, with flight to Miami at 5 a.m. Friday.
Boarding Virgin ship "Scarlet Lady" Saturday for 8 nights
exploring Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands,
and Bahamas. High temperature expected: 84F (29C). Lowest
expected 70F (21C). I will find these temperatures intolerably
hot, but hoping to cope!
See y'all on the other side...

Arks, hope you have fun and enjoy your trip. Chilly here, 21
degrees this morning and a little dust of snow. I'm afraid we
are in the old and lazy stage of life, happy to stand by the
fire and look at the weather out the window, travel takes too
much effort.

Have a great vacation! Very cold here, but it’s January in
New England, so no complaints.

I also fly south Thursday - IF the airport is open. We have ice
under snow that caused a LOT of wrecks on the Interstate and
schools & businesses to close (they actually named this storm -
we have become a bunch of wooses. I can understand the schools -
some of the places the buses had to go are dangerous in dry
weather.). There were semi trucks in ditches and some that ended
up blocking exits or entrances to the Interstate (considering
what I have seen with some of these semi-cowboys, I am surprised
it is not more). My sister is going to Florida to see my brother
and since I have a direct flight to the airport in his city in
Florida, I invited myself for a "one last sibling reunion" for
the 3 of us remaining. Not hyperbole - his wife called me Sunday
to tell me he had been in the hospital since Jan 1. He came home
yesterday. We have to be very careful around him because he has
little or NO immune system due to anti-rejection drugs (since
1998) and the cancer treatments he just finished 3 months ago.
As I type, I checked the predictions. Temps for Thursday have
been upgraded to 11 F and Friday has upgraded to 8 F (they were
8 and 1 respectively a couple days ago). This is significant as
single digits put my waterlines at risk of freezing (no way to
get to the waterlines without removing my kitchen floor). By the
time I return Sunday, the temps will be back to a balmy high of
30 (predicted). *I have formulated a plan with dripping faucets
and oil-filled heaters in the kitchen and my bathroom hoping to
keep it from freezing - crossing fingers.
Enjoy your trip.

Good plan. Dripping faucets and keeping some heat on usually
works. I don't know what an oil-filled heater is. Doesn't sound
like something I'd want to leave burning in an empty house, but
I know you know what you're doing!
You have a good trip, and a safe trip, too!

This is an oil-filled heater. They are actually the most
efficient of the electric space heaters.

I am home. The waterlines apparently did not freeze - at least
did not burst.
Great visit with the siblings. Visited with my sister after we
picked her up where she was staying and then we spent about
hours with my brother - we did not want to tire him out. My
sister-in-law called my niece last night to ask if I wanted to
get up early and come over from donuts & coffee before I left
for the airport - of course I did so had another couple hours
with him this morning.
Yesterday we stopped and got meats & cheeses for sandwiches for
lunch - should have made a sandwich this morning for at the
airport or on the plane. Both flights were quite pleasant. I
might go down again this summer.

Oh! We were on Scarlet before the last drydock. How did you like
it? Enjoy the Wake?

I loved Wake, and that they offer Eggs Benedict every morning!
It was different, compared to other cruise ships I've been on.
No formal dining room. I loved that. Lots of smaller restaurants
to pick from. We loved the Korean Hot Pot place and the Test
Kitchen.
No buffet, but several cafeteria-style stops, which I also
liked. Could get English breakfast there every morning, with
eggs any style, great American-style bacon, and stewed/roasted
tomatoes. Just lacked the sauteed mushrooms to be perfect.
I'd go on Virgin again in a heartbeat, nice and no one under 18
allowed on board.

We have been on 4 and have 2 more booked, out of LA
Razzle used to have the BEST bacon, but they have reformulated
it twice because it was too popular. Yes, too popular. Best
version was candied with maple and a little chili for spice.
Best dish at the Wake... the beef marrow, which was off the menu
for a while.
