Chaos ending in $$$$

Daughter walks through the studio (now crap holding room on my
side of house) and says, Mom i smell gas. So I call the gas
company and they immediately send out the nicest young man with
a meter. No readings in the rooms. Then I remember the space
heaters - he goes outside to recalibrate, comes back in, and
finds a leak at the valve of the space heater in my bathroom. I
need to replace the valve, meanwhile the gas to the house is
SHUT OFF! Get the plumber and they replace the valves at me
space heaters. NOW the gas guy will come back the next day (it
was afternoon) and the plumber needs to run a pressure test on
the gas line. I call the plumbing shop and leave a message about
what has to be done and what time the gas guy will be here so
please have someone available. No call back in the morning from
plumber.
Gas guy arrives so I call plumbing shop only to be informed he
DOES NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT FOR a pressure test. It is now
almost noon on FRIDAY and I am trying to find someone or a
plumber who can do a pressure test. After striking out with
every call (no one available until next week), I call a friend
who knows everyone (everyone on the high end $$ of course) BUT
they can come NOW! Call gas guy & they both arrive at the same
time. Pressure test finds another leak - they can actually HEAR
the air escaping! and it is UNDER the house. No basement - just
a crawlspace that a chubby baby cold not navigate. He calls the
boss who tells me it will most likely be be $$$$. Problem: no
gas = no heat downstairs (electric baseboard heaters in guest
rooms (3 rooms of Veterans & wives arriving Saturday for 3
nights) AND NO HOT WATER.
This "Sh*tshow started about 1 PM and they were done at 6 PM
(charges stopped when they got back to the shop). My gas line
went from meter along the outside of the house until it went
under neat the back porch (which had become the kitchen) so they
cut the gas pipe there, threaded in more pipe, came around the
back to where the water heater & dryer are, drilled through the
wall and brought in service. After the gas was turned on again
they lit the water tank for me and made sure everything was
functioning (except I no longer have an extra heater in my
bathroom or the kitchen - both too far away to get much heat
from the furnace). The boss called me to get credit card number
& give me the joyous news of the total - my eyes watered - $4711
and change. It will wipe out my savings (B & B insurance this
month also) but thankfully I have it (remember those ceiling
tiles - they will also be on this month's statement!)
Veterans arrived Saturday in time for the Mystery Dinner Theater
event I had purchased tickets for and they had plenty of hot
water for showers! I sincerely hope this is the LAST thing I
have to do for this 1912 house!

It's always something! Something comes up every week.
Got my 2025 insurance quote yesterday. 2023 it went up from
$4000 in 2022 to $6000. This year it was $8000 and for 2025 they
want over $10,000!
Needless to say, I'm shopping for a different company!
