Magic Rooms
By: Generic Date: September 9, 2024, 7:49 pm

Lately, I get a lot of emails asking why I don't have a room on
a certain date.... I'm SOLD OUT. That's why. How am I magically
supposed to add a room to the building?

They're not asking you to add rooms. They just believe your
reservation system must not have accurate info, because how
could you possibly be completely booked?
People assume restaurants always have a few tables available,
even if they say they don't. Same with hotels. The public
"knows' they have some rooms available. Just a matter of being
the squeaky wheel, or offering a large enough "tip."
If only it were that easy.

While I was relief night audit at a Holiday Inn, I had a man
come in about 2 AM wanting a room on a Saturday night. When I
told him that I had no rooms, he proceeded to say, "Do you mean
to tell me that if the President of the United States came in
for a room you would not have a room for him?" I told him I
would be able to offer the use of a Conference Room, but I would
NOT be able to give him a room." I got a look of total disbelief
Conversely, there was a man late in the evening of an event come
to the desk, fling his gold AMEX card, and demand a room. I
picked up his card, slid it back to him and said, "I am sorry
but we are booked." He was not happy but did not argue. We WERE
booked, but if we had been empty, we would have been booked for
him.

I'm the same way. A bit too independent for my own good, I
guess. Or, I'm just not THAT hungry.
I wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face, but I would turn
down a reservation from someone I don't like.

Sir, do you really think that the President of the United States
and his entire entourage would have failed to plan? No. They
would have made sure that there was a lot of security and enough
rooms to protect the president. He also would not have an
expectation that every hotel in the country would hold back
enough rooms for him, because we are a business and can't just
leave rooms empty, because that's bad business.
