She tried to cheat me, but wants a discount!
By: Arks Date: June 19, 2023, 6:29 pm

She booked the room back when I had a sofa bed in the room. It's
no longer there. I now provide an air mattress for more than 2
in the room. Sofa beds don't last long, and they are horrible to
sleep on.
She booked/paid for two people in the room.
She arrived and said, "Where's the sofa bed? Where will my
daughter sleep?"
I said the sofa bed is long gone, and you booked for two people
in the king size bed.
She said, "Your website said the room had a sofa bed. I had
planned to put my daughter on the sofa bed. You should have told
me you remove it."
She then proceeded to demand a discount because her daughter had
no place to sleep.
I said, "Let me get this straight. You planned to put a third
person in the room without telling me or paying me, and you want
a discount because I didn't provide a bed for the person you
didn't tell me about, or pay me for?"
Needless to say, she didn't get a discount and the daughter
slept on the couch that replaced the dead sofa bed, sleeping
under a bath towel because she didn't pay for the air
mattress/sheets/pillow/blanket.

We use a high end inner spring futon. It looks like a couch but
they don't know how to make it go down :) It's the size of a
double bed.

One thing about this business is people are interesting. Perhaps
they are used to large properties with employees that don't
notice rather a small place where the owner cares but also
expects them to show the same care.

For rollaway, we got one of the inflatable ones — actual twin
size and elevated. It’s really comfy, deflates to a small
package with wheels, and auto-inflates and deflates easily. We
want to replace all of our ratty rollaway cots with them!

I have spring-loaded cots we used when camping as we got older.
There are no bats to dig into a back so they are "fairly"
comfortable. I have an "egg-crate" foam that I put on it under a
mattress pad & the sheet. It is about 6 or 8 inches above the
floor so I use it when guests bring a kid mostly but it has been
used for a 3rd adult.

I lack storage space for cots or rollaway beds and truthfully
don't want the additional guests in a room besides maybe a
toddler. We offer a choice of room sizes; a couple of rooms can
sleep up to 5 but I have no desire to cram additional guests in
a smaller room.

Yes, in your case I wouldn't offer temporary beds either. But
all my rooms have just a king size bed, so I offer the air
mattresses, which are comfortable and fold away to almost
nothing between uses. But the trouble of setting them up and
taking them out of the rooms, and extra laundry, is barely
offset by the $15/day I charge to use them.
I need to rethink that, maybe charge a flat $35 regardless of
how many days they are used. Since I only set them up and take
them down once, and wash the sheets after they leave, that might
make more sense. It would keep me from making just $15 on a
one-night stay using the air mattress.

Figure out the real cost of it. How much time and trouble is it.
And then charge double that.

That effort of setting up and taking down is the real issue
especially with those guests who desire a rollaway expecting
that to be cheaper than renting the larger room with sufficient
sleeping space.
Arks, you have such attractive rooms, would something like a
Murphy bed fit and fill the need of occasional extra sleeping
space?

I looked at them but decided I just don't have the space. To add
them, I'd have to give up the seating in the rooms (sofas and
recliners). Plus, I'd probably resent having to set up the
Murphy bed just as much as the air mattresses.
I'm just complaining. It's not a big problem. I get almost no
requests for extra bedding most of the years. It's just when
school's out and people start traveling with the kids.
