IT is a Holiday Weekend - why would I reserve?
By: gillumhouse Date: September 1, 2024, 10:32 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This weekend, every 5 years is my high school ALL-School
Reunion.
I had no reservations at the cut-off date for registering - so I
registered for the reunion and the dinner. We had a Parade of
the Classes and then each class either had their get-together
the night before AND after the Parade or just after the parade
and before the dinner. My class had a pizza party at the home of
a classmate.
We are at the dinner, it is at least 5 PM and my phone rings. I
can hear a voice - enough to know it is mot a dead air - tell
the voice I can hardly hear can I call bck. He said something
else - enough that I can sort of hear so I say, How can I help
you? and he wants a room. When? TONIGHT. Nope, I am not even
home. Bye.
Saturday night on a holiday weekend an NOW you decide to book a
room?

That's how it was done, 30 years ago. These days it's so easy to
find and book in advance, it's hard to believe some people still
wait until the end of the day to start looking for a place to
sleep. You'd think they'd learn, but they don't, that failure to
plan is planning to fail!

Meanwhile in ResKey, I move my LD Weekend from Past and change
the date for 2025 and then setup the rate adjustments. So, does
the price of Saturday night go up by $20 or $40 a night for next
year?

Arks, I'm going to be contrary, but when does the day end? Old
age now, days are short, but in younger years the day ended when
I couldn't go any further. I remember 3 or 4 such adventures
during life. I think the last one we took the younger son and
family to pick up a truck he purchased online. The day ended at
a crossroads on I-40 in Arkansas around 3AM, we got a nap before
moving on. I suppose I've been lucky to find rooms in those
cases, but my stops were not exactly destinations.

Ahhh, but a motel stop is not a B & B stop.
Most of my travels are motel stops because I need to be
somewhere on a certain day and have something happening here so
I have to hit the road at the last possible minute. I am usually
what I call "hit & split" traveler -stop late-leave early. Much
as I prefer B & B, that will not fly.

Indeed. And I am the opposite. I plan ahead, do my homework,
find a cool and convenient place to stay. I have not traveled
without pre-arranged lodging in many years. I love the
planning/researching. Actually, it's my favorite part of any
trip!!
Obviously, this is why I'm irritated by people who message me at
8 p.m., asking for a room, and the rate. They are clueless about
my place, and the upscale rates for my area.

In the "old days" I planned and planned for our trips. I sent
for tourist info (this was pre-Internet remember) to find places
of interest and history and the routes to get there. We would
try to visit friends and family also. The year we took the kids
to Williamsburg I found a motel with a kitchenette to save some
money. We made that our "base-camp" to see Williamsburg,
Jamestown, Yorktown, Hampton Roads, Fort Monroe, and I think we
went to Virginia Beach to look for sea shells, not realizing it
was NOT on the ocean, it was on the Chesapeake Bay so no shells.
I also planned our hotels the year we went to the windjammer
cruise off the coast of Maine as we went from historic site to
historic site - only to have my Daddy mess all that planning by
getting himself in ICU. I did NOT cancel the Back Bay Hilton in
Boston because I had a special rate arranged for me and would
not be able to get that back. He recovered quickly once I was
there, moved to a regular room (refused to let us take him back
to his house in Florida - he was going to his camper on the hill
on Ohio. So I gave him our itinerary, routes, and license plate
#, and we continued the trip. (He died 10 years later in my
Gillum House.) Our trips were in the days of taking a handful of
dimes (does that tell you how long ago?) and call motels until
you find a room. Side note: on the Maine trip (with 4 kids in a
Jeep), he decided it was too early to stop when I wanted to
around 6 PM. that night we "slept?" in the car near Ft
Ticonderoga - no rooms at the inns.

It must be nice to have an organized life. Mine never seemed to
fit the plan. Most of our vacations in the early years were from
the coast to our current mountain area, never seemed difficult
finding lodging. At least 2 trips got diverted with me spending
the day in a company meeting in Charlotte while wife and kids
sat in car. At least no cell phones in those days, if you made
it 50 miles from home you were free until your return. Always
had the kind of jobs where you didn't know for sure you were
going on vacation until you were miles down the road and out of
touch.
1969, new VW Bus, went to Michigan to see wife's sister. Left
South Carolina in the wee hours times to be at the VW dealer in
Asheville at 7 AM for the initial oil change. Stopped for the
night around 9:30 PM when I couldn't go any further, up above
Cincinati, little place called the Shady Rest out in the
country.
Last long adventure was 2019, took son to pick up new truck in
Oklahoma. His wife had a job interview, so we didn't leave
Knoxville till 5:30 PM on Friday and he had to be back at work
Monday morning. Just drive till you can't go any further.
Early days travel depended on jobs and money to travel, these
days it seems to be health and doctor appointments, and no
energy to take the trips I always desired.
