Just when you think you’ve heard it all

Doorbell rings around 6:30. Woman identifies herself and I
recognize her name. I said, “you were supposed to be here
yesterday.” She was the no show from the day before. A one
nighter. She says she’s here now and I tell her we are full.
It’s two women but the one is doing all the talking.
She had asked to move her reservation through a note from book
ing dot com. We said no because we had no rooms to offer. She
didn’t cancel, just came when she wanted to.
I called five other inns and finally found one with a room -
$100 more per night than ours. Sent her on her way.
I did tell her that I wouldn’t refund her for the no show. I
said, “if you return an item to the store, I can put it back on
the shelf, but I can’t do that here, I can’t resell a night in a
room that is in the past.”
She noticed a self checkin note on the desk waiting for the
guest to arrive. She suggested I just give her that room and
kick out the not-yet-arrived guest. :o

Not surprised at all. IF for not other reason, she owes you for
taking the time to find another accommodation. Many people (not
the normal B & B patrons) think that a bed & breakfast is so
starving for business that whatever works - they are doing us a
favor to book with us. The tidbit that she was a B.con guest
       says it all.

You nailed her, and I'm glad you didn't back down on the missed
reservation. She knows now that she can't always push her way
       through situations like that.
I had a sort of reverse situation several years ago. We arrived
at a hotel to check in, and they had made a mistake and
double-booked our rooms, and they were full for the weekend.
They said we'd have to go somewhere else.
I said, we are here first, why are WE the ones who have to
leave? Let the other people go looking for a room. You have time
to contact them and let them know they have no room. Luckily, we
       got the rooms.
