How do you come up with Cover Art for your book?

As someone who is more of the artistic ability than the creative
writing ability I'm curious....what do you want in your
cover-art? I've read about authors who have nearly no say in
their cover art (and we are talking huge authors) down to
authors who create their own. Are you artistically creative
when it comes to your cover art or are you someone who needs
something created for them? As an artist myself I love working
WITH an author to make their vision come to life. It's a pet
peeve of mine to see artwork for a book cover that has nothing
whatsoever to do with the contents. Oh! A special peeve of
mine is when the characters on the cover don't match the
characters in the book! Does that bother anyone else? As a
graphic artist I strive to make the author's vision come to
life...come on, be honest, what are your thoughts? Attached is
a copy of a cove I did for a book called "Going To
California"...tell me your thoughts. Does the cove convey the
title? Would you do something different?

I have read a few books that the cover didn't convey the story
at all, which left me feeling let down in several ways. I'm a
visual person so when I see a book cover, I can get drawn into
the story before I even start reading!

I find I am often let down by cover art as well, maybe because
I'm a very visual person. I've heard some people don't even
look at the covers; personally, I have never been one of those
people...it's generally a cover that grabs my attention when
browsing books. My biggest pet peeve is when characters on a
cover look nothing like the characters in the story, that just
       goes right through me!

       Me too!
I've often wondered though how many books would sell now, if
they had the same covers as the classics. Can you imagine the
reaction of some people if they had to actually stop and read
the synopsis first, or maybe even ask a clerk what the latest of
Stephanie Myers was about. Or worse yet... what if some
unsuspecting elderly grandma happened to pick up a Shades of
Grey book and started skimming through! :o
I do understand how readers would prefer to envision the
character and backdrop on their own, though. However, I like to
immerse myself totally in a story - let's call it the Literary
HD Experience. Now if we can get soundtracks imbedded in the
paper copies, I think we'd be set!
