Outlines or Wing It?

I don't use an outline per se, but usually have several things
that I'd like to see in the story as I write. The closest thing
I can call my outline style is "Fly by the Seat of My Pants,"
but it also bears a slight similarity to the Snowflake Method.
Does anyone else wing it while writing, or it is outlines all
the way?

I usually have the best of intentions of creating an
outline...but it never works out that I actually use it. Even
in college I would create an outline but end up flying by the
seat of my pants. I always had in mind certain facts/or
incidents I'd like to use...and would always work them in. I
found I would work myself backwards in an outline...instead of
forwards into one.

I think outlines can help the organizational process. I know
I've done them for college papers, but I've only ever done one
for a story. It helped because I was going back and forth
between different periods of time. All my other writing projects
always have some planning involved, but nothing to the extent of
requiring an outline. My current project is completely "by the
seat of my pants". It is something new for me, but I'm enjoying
it :)

That's when I would primarily use them as well. The stories I
am writing involve time travel and historical events so instead
of an "outline" I have set up a spreadsheet to keep things
straight when I need to refer to it. I have dates, historical
events, character names (because occasionally I seem to try to
change them), physical characteristics/attributes, Titles,
Familial information etc. Heck, even George R.R. Martin has a
friend who keeps all of his facts straight for "The Game of
Thrones" series. He admits he can't remember sometimes what he
has stated some of his characters look like :)
