The Samson Syndrome
By: Intervention Date: August 2, 2015, 6:26 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Lust is used to see products with more success than any other
advertising method. It has destroyed
many a marriage, many a reputation, many ministries, and many
lives. The Bible gives many examples
of how lust destroys but one that stands out above all others is
Samson.
Samson begins his life journey with a great start. He is blessed
and anointed of God. He held so much
potential but he did not finish well. Ed Young, Jr. says of
Samson, “He was a he‐man with a “she” weakness.”
What is lust? By definition it is a strong _____________ for
something that cannot be ____________
within the will of God. This is where Satan works the hardest
and with most effectiveness.
BACKGROUND OF SAMSON: He was God’s provision to change Israel.
Israel was in a period of darkness
and despair and God wanted this man to make a difference. (See
Judges 13:3). Samson was to take a
Nazarite vow (Nazarite means to be separated, dedicated, and
different from the crowd). He was not to
cut his hair, drink alcohol, or touch anything unclean (dead).
The Principles of Lust
LUST HAPPENS WHEN AN INNER ______________ MEETS STRONGER
________________.
Read Judges 14:1. Lust begins with an eye problem. It did for
Eve. It did for Lot. It did for Ananias and
Saphira. It did for Jacob. It did for David. It did for Lucifer
who fell from heaven and became Satan, the
Devil. This verse literally means that she “caught his eye.”
Satan uses distractions to get our attention.
Satan will see to it that you see something attractive,
alluring, and appealing.
PRINCIPLE: When that which is within you is weaker than that
which is without you, then that
which is without you will more‐than‐likely overcome
you (overtake). If you haven’t been strengthening
the inside—your relationship with the Lord, the outside
temptations will have greater power and
appeal to you. The magnet inside you must be stronger than the
magnet outside of you.
2. LUST CAUSES YOU TO ______________ GOD’S WORD.
Read Judges 14:2. Samson saw a Philistine girl but she was to be
off limits. She was not a believer in God.
Lust makes you forget God’s Word. It gives you spiritual
amnesia. It doesn't matter what God wants for
your life. (See Deuteronomy 7:1,3) He didn’t know anything or
care anything about her character, personality,
her spiritual life. It was total physical attraction.
3. LUST DISREGARDS GODLY ________________.
Read Judges 14:3. He was knowingly disregarding the Biblical
advice to not marry an unbeliever. He was
crossing the boundaries of God’s will. (See 2 Corinthians
6:13‐14). He went against Godly Counsel, Godly
Advice, against God’s command. Lust affects your Ears. It
deafens you to the Holy Spirit’s warnings in your
life. Don’t date and don’t mate someone who is lost or who is
saved but not in God’s will.
Read Judges 14:4‐6. God can use us in spite of our
mistakes, however, it’s not without consequences.
4. LUST LEADS YOU TO HANG AROUND WITH THE ____________ PEOPLE.
Read Judges 14:7. “He talked to her.” Lust affects the lips. You
have conversations you shouldn’t be having.
You are hanging with people you shouldn’t be hanging with. I
Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived:
"Bad company corrupts good morals."
5. LUST MAKES IT ______________ TO GIVE IN TO TEMPTATION.
Read Judges 14:8. He begins to compromise in other areas. Once
you compromise in one thing it
becomes easier to give in and compromise the next time. Sin gets
easier with practice.
6. LUST AFFECTS ________________ PEOPLE.
Read Judges 14:9. Your lust is not a Lone Ranger. It will affect
innocent people. He touched something
dead. No remorse, nor regret, no conviction. Lust deadens your
heart. It desensitizes you.
7. LUST MAKES YOU FEEL AT HOME WITH THOSE WHO DON’T __________
_________.
Read Judges 14:10. He broke the third part of his vow to God. He
went to a party and drank. He felt at
home with those who were not spiritual, didn’t know God or walk
with God. Lust has many tentacles. It is
never satisfied.
8. LUST BRINGS _______________ TO EVERY AREA OF YOUR LIFE.
Desiring something outside of God’s

1. will, brings along with it worry, fear, anger, physical
dangers, etc. You step outside of the umbrella
of God’s protection and God’s blessings.
9. LUST CAUSES YOU TO LOSE YOUR ___________________. When you
hear the name Samson,
what do you think of? What takes years to build can all be taken
down in one act of selfishness. It makes
Christianity appear to the world that it makes no difference
when it comes to morality.
10. LUST IS THE _______________ CREATED WHEN THERE IS A LACK OF
______________ WITH GOD.
Read Judges 14:1‐15, 17. There is no mention of Samson’s
spiritual life—his praying, and his intimacy
with God. Satan’s strategy is to hammer away at your passion for
God.
Read Judges 15:18. There is only one recorded prayer in his
life, with the exception of the prayer he
prayed right before he died.
11. LUST CAN RESULT WHEN ______________ AND _________________
NEEDS ARE NOT MET.
Obviously, until a Christian faces the fact that he has three
enemies—the world, the flesh, and the
devil—committed to keeping him from living a spiritual life, and
he takes those enemies seriously, he
cannot overcome them. There is a close connection between our
physical and our spiritual condition.
12. LUST IS ALWAYS WAITING FOR AN ____________________.
Read Judges 14:20. Unless you deal with lust, it will come back
and deal with you.
Read Judges 16:1. Lust is always waiting for an
opportunity—opportune moment.
I Corinthians 10:12, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands
take heed lest he fall.”
Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty
spirit before stumbling.”
Judges 16:2‐3. He escaped the trap. But sin always catches
up with us. You can’t escape it.
13. LUST LOOKS FOR AN “________________ _________”.
Read Judges 16:4‐5. The word “Entice” means “to find an
opening.” An Achilles Heal, a weak spot, a
vulnerable place. The Philistines offered Delilah $5,000 to
discover the secret of Samson’s strength. She
took it and started his subtle seduction. Satan is looking for
your spot...that target of opportunity.
14. LUST INVITES __________________ TO GET INVOLVED. Feelings
get involved and emotions are just
one small step removed from acting, from doing. 3 times Delilah
asks Samson the source of his strength.
3 times he told her and 3 times she had him attacked.
15. LUST ______________ YOU.
It’s like Novocain. Read Judges 16:15. His tongue got him in
trouble. He never learned to keep his
mouth shut. Read Judges 16:19. Sin puts you to sleep, it numbs
you.
16. LUST CAUSES YOU TO LOSE THE ___________ OF GOD.
Read Judges 16:20. God’s power was removed from his life and he
didn’t even know it. He took God’s
power for granted. He assumed God would always protect him and
bless him. What are you depending
on? You can’t lose God in your life once He is in your life, but
you can lose the sense of His power in
your life and end up in a moment of temptation with little
resistance.
The Power to Overcome Lust
1. __________—PROTECT YOUR EYES. Samson had eye trouble. He
looked and he lusted. Job 31:1.
“Covenant,” means—a pledge, an agreement. “Look,” means to think
about, or give attention to. Read
Matthew 5:28
2. ____________—ASK GOD TO MAKE YOU WISE. You need the wisdom of
God to stay away from Satan’s
traps. Pray for wisdom everyday. (James 1:5).
3. ___________________—MAXIMIZE MATRIMONY. Men, give your wife
the affection, love, understanding,
time, and sensitivity she needs. Ladies, meet the physical needs
of your husband. Show your
love for him. Don’t let your marriage grow stagnant and stale.
Always be working on your marriage.
4. ____________________—MINIMIZE MIND GARBAGE. Proverbs 23:7
“For as he thinks within himself,
so he is.” You become what you think about.
5. ________________—LET YOUR CRIES BE MADE TO GOD. Jesus taught
us this as he faced his most
intense hour of temptation in the Garden of Gethsemane. (See
Matthew 26:39, 42) Prayer makes you
sensitive and aware of Satan’s traps.
6. ____________—DON’T FALL FOR SATAN’S LIES. Read John 8:44. The
Father of Lies will bombard you
with lies when it comes to lust. His lies act like a blindfold
so you won’t see the consequences.
7. _______________—LET GOD MONOPOLIZE YOU. Matthew 6:33
Amplified, “But seek (aim at and
strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness
(His way of doing and being right), and then all
these things taken together will be given you besides.”
8. ________________—REALIZE THAT YOU ARE NOT ABOVE FALLING INTO
SIN. It could happen to you
9. ________________—LET GODLY PEOPLE ADVISE YOU. You need
accountability. Titus 2:1‐9.
10. _________________—SAY YOUR GOOD‐BYE’S TO THOSE THINGS
IN YOUR LIFE THAT ARE FANNING
THE FLAMES OF LUST. 2 Timothy 2:22.
