Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of world’s
biggest
social network site, Facebook
By Adebola Rayo
Born in May 1984, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is the
son of Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist, and Karen
Zuckerberg, a psychiatrist.
Zuckerberg created his first computer messaging
programme, Zucknet, at age 12. To encourage him,
his father used it in his dental office and the family
also used it to communicate in the house. While
most kids his age were playing computer games,
his own idea of having fun was creating computer
games! His parents recognised his interest in
technology and nurtured it by hiring a private
computer tutor for him.
The All-Rounder
While many know Zuckerberg for his prowess in
the information technology sector, few know that
he also excelled at various other things. He
developed his mind by feeding his brain with
information and knowledge in various disciplines
from a very young age. While in High School, he
excelled in Classical Literature studies and won
prizes for this, alongside prizes in Maths, Physics
and Astronomy. He also learnt to speak several
languages, among which are French and Hebrew.
Besides his mind, Zuckerberg also trained his
body and was very good at sports like Fencing.
However, he was focused on his major strength;
information technology. Before he left High School,
he had built applications, one of which was
Synapse. He got offers from companies like
Microsoft, who wanted to buy his software and also
hire him. At a very young age, his skills had been
recognised by the leaders of the technology
industry. However, he declined the offers and
enrolled in Harvard in 2002. While in Harvard, he
built computer programmes and gained a
reputation among the students as the best software
developer in the school.
At a time when Harvard students were clamouring
for the University authorities to develop a website
that would allow them to upload their contact
details and photographs, Zuckerberg decided to
take the bull by the horns and do it. He wanted to
build a site that would rival whatever the University
planned to build.
Together with three of his friends, Dustin
Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin and Chris Hughes,
Zuckerberg built a site called The Facebook in
February 2004. The site allowed Harvard students
to create profiles, upload their contact details and
photos, and communicate with other users. The
four friends ran the site from Zuckerberg’s dorm
room till June 2004 when Zuckerberg and
Moskovitz dropped out of Harvard and moved the
company to Palo Alto, U.S.A.
He wanted to concentrate fully on the site and the
more he did so, the more the site flourished. In
2005, they opened Facebook up to students from
other colleges and high schools. At the end of that
year, there were 5.5 million users and it had
become a site that companies were very eager to
advertise on.
Taking advice
Zuckerberg did not hesitate to take advice from
those who had gone before him and succeeded in
the technology sector. The late Steve Jobs, former
CEO of Apple, coached Zuckerberg on how to build
the right management team with the right focus to
lead the company to the top.
Advice like this helped Facebook to flourish.
Although huge corporations were offering to buy
Facebook, Zuckerberg and his partners turned
them down and continued to improve the site till it
became the biggest social network in the world.
Today, Facebook has over 500 million users from
across the world.
