       Curing skins
       Clean them of any fleshy debris by scraping with a sharp rock or
       knife after getting permission. Then stake them out in the sun
       for a couple of days. Once completely dried rub the hide with a
       stick or rock until it is soft and smooth. With other hides, you
       remove the fur by scraping it away with a shell or knife after
       getting permission then rub both sides until soft and smooth.
       Then hang the hides in the storage shed until they are needed
       for leather work.

       1. skin the animal. (be very careful to leave as much fat,
       membrane on the carcass of the animal)
       2. take extra care around the head, backend and tail, those are
       the hardest part to skin
       3. fleshing - remove any remaining flesh from the skin
       4. stake the hide to the ground
       5. take a curved knife and cut any fat membrane veins from the
       hide
       6. you will know if it is a summer pelt the hair can pull
       through, this is normal. just makes it much harder
       7. braining - take the brains from the animal. mix them with
       soap a natural soap and water, cook them, mashing the brains
       with the water soap solution
       8. take a rough stick, granite or sandstone and rough up the
       hide
       9. take half of the solution and rub it into the hide, working
       it in
       10. leave it to dry
       11. redo the braining this will make the hide soft.
       12. softening - stretch the pelt, pulling it until it dries. if
       there are any hard spots, re-brain it to soften it
       13. smoking - hang the pelt down wind of a fire of rotten wood,
       keep the flames from it. the smoke will keep the fleas from the
       pelt, because of the natural wood smell.
