Feeding and watering animals
In addition for feeding and watering, the pens are to be kept
clean. The dry bosk dung gathered into sacks to used as fuel for
the fires.
The amount of water and feed will vary from pen to pen due to
the amount of animals kept.
Kalila:
Food and water: 2 buckets of water in the trough, and the
scraps from the kitchen.
Once a week, an older or injured verr is lead to the kailla pen.
Kailla need the kill as much as the meat.
Kailla should be washed, and their coats combed.
Tabuk:
Food and water: 2 buckets of water in trough, and 2 buckets of
feed grain
Tarsk:
Food and water: 2 buckets of water in trough, and 2 buckets of
feed grain
Verr:
Food and water: 2 buckets of water in trough, 2 buckets of feed
grain and fresh bales of grass
Also, verr must be milked every day.
Be wary of flaring tempers and nasty horns.
Vulo:
Food and water: 1 bucket of water in trough, 1 bucket of feed
grain.
Also, gather the eggs daily, 3/4 go to the kitchen and the rest
leave for hatchlings for butchering when they are grown. Wash
the eggs before storing them, and don't forget to hold a lit
candle to the egg to make sure no baby vulo are inside.
Bosk:
Food and water: 2 buckets of water in trough, 2 buckets of feed
grain and fresh bales of grass
Bosk are to be milked twice a day.
Bosks should also be washed, this means actually washing them,
combing the long, shaggy coats and polishing/oiling their horns
and hooves.
Bosk are ill-tempered, aggressive and very large beasts. Care
must be taken when working among them.
Tarn:
Slaves do not generally care for tarns. However, slaves should
know the proper care, in case they are one day owned by a Master
who has one.
One must remember, that tarns are not friendly, even if they are
considered "tamed". A trust must be established between the tarn
and human. It is not uncommon for a tarn to one day turn on
their rider.
Tarns require very little care. They are kept hobbled with a
heavy chain, the chain is attached to a heavy collar that is on
the ankle of the tarn. The other end of the chain is bolted to a
large rock.
Trust: the first key to caring for a tarn and developing a level
of trust between bird and human
Affection: tarns love their beaks rubbed.
Respect: respect the great birds all the time
Never: never forget that a tarn is a carnivore
A slave should check with the Master, to see what he requires
for the care of the tarn.
The following is basic guidelines:
1.) before approaching, make sure the bird is hobbled
2.) approach tarn cots slowly as to not startle the bird
3.) each tarn has its own "tarn call" or whistle that is tuned
to the individual bird
4.) release the tarn from the hobble, stand back and blow into
the tarn call. this tells the bird he may fly to go feed.
5.) fill the tarns trough with 1 bucket of fresh water per day
6.) when the tarn returns from feeding, re-attach the chain to
the hobble
Tarns may be fed older vulo and verr if they can not hunt on
their own to feed. They may also be fed, intestines and other
parts of bosk that are kept in slop buckets after butchering.
