Plane of the Week: the Bf-110
  HTML https://i.postimg.cc/g2HkL1K9/tumblr-mkrl98wut-Y1s6wip4o1-1280.jpg
Oh yes... an older plane of the game... and one STILL (in my
opinion) relevant. I do not believe it gets near the use and or
love that it should be getting in this game.
Uh-huh, I understand it wasn't a super fighter in comparison to
the Spitfire, Mustang, Bf-109, Fw-190 and so on (mostly
single-engine lighter faster types), but the old bird can STILL
       perform!
I like this plane, but was it a death-trap? Maybe, in
comparisons to the aft-mentioned fighters above... but totally
useless/irrelevant? NO SIR! Not in MY book!
She was well made, strong as hell, ...a little blocky looking,
yeah, but to me that spells TANK, not irrelevancy. I like those
BIG, BEEFY types personally, and the 110 had the balls to go
along with it's tank-like and blocky looks. She performed...
especially early in the war and even later did yeoman service in
       other duties.
She had the guns to pound hell out of ground units or any plane
(in particular bombers) that got in front of her weapons. She
could drop a good bomb load, had good range, flew well, took
heavy damage and survived, was available in good numbers...could
even take recon photos if needed, she could fly equally well in
night or day, in grass or desert sand, and so on.
But... she's not sexy as say a Spitfire or a 109... and sex, as
in anything else, is what DRAWS so many people's attention, eh?
       d'oh!
How many of you guys REALLY have given this old bird a good
workout? Raise your hands, please. Ha! I'll bet not too many.
But she IS worthy... trust me. If you have never flown her, or
not flown her in a long time, set up a good mission for her and
take her out... you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just don't try
to handle her like a Spit or a 109 and you'll see what I mean.
I just flew a mission against a couple of Hurricanes... and
yeah, they out-turned me, yet I nailed one (flamed him with my
heavy firepower) and put holes in the other... yes, I got shot
up, but I managed to break away from the damaged Hurricane and
       make my way home anyway.

       I agree Beo a good all workhorse,,Yeah she's not a sports car
like a Spit ,,P-51 ,,109 or the other glamor gals but a solid
hitting ship great for attacking airfields and especially in the
early war scenarios Really a great mudmover,,I fly it in EAW
from time to time mostly interdiction missions..to be honest
I've never taken one up in IL-2,,Something I plan to do
later.Ground attack missions are my favorites and I like the
IL-2,,P-47 and the 110 for those,,Something to fly when it gets
       hot later,,

I read a recent study on kill/loss ratios during the BoB.
(Sorry, cant find the reference at present.) Using boom and zoom
tactics as in the 109 the 110 was not far behind the ratios for
the 109 Spitfire and Hurricane. Propaganda claimed it was a
failure but the facts state otherwise. It was easy to fly and as
you say had good weaponry and could take a lot of damage. It had
the advantage of two engines when flying over the Channel if
damaged. Rudorffer's Erpro210 unit was one of the most
successful fighter bomber units of the period with its mix of
110 and 109s. That would be a campaign in itself.
It was the Luftwaffe nightfighter mainstay and deadly to the end
       of that campaign.
Red Kite publications have produced two photographic volumes on
the Bf110 in the BoB which are very informative.

Ah! THE Zerstoerer for excellence! I think we could talk of it
for hours: was it effective or a failure? Is it correctly
modeled in the game or overdone?
Personally, I think it is (quite) correctly modeled in IL-2 and
was effective as day fighter during initial part of war. Then
its capabilities faded out until it was (correctly) removed from
day duties, as the ratio successes/losses became too tiny.
I introduced it (as player aircraft) at least in two campaigns
of mine: North Africa and BoB, and it works. I can deal with
enemy fighters. Only engines look underpowered when carrying
bombs (and here I did some fix in flight model, but couldn't
"bent" historical reality, so it remains for me unfit as
       fighter-bomber).

I have had good experiences flying this plane also. There was/is
a great campaign at M4T called something like Murmansk to
Morocco that uses the BF-110. It is a fairly long campaign that
uses several maps and explores all roles of the plane.

This is VERY interesting to me, Von... this Murmansk to Morocco
campaign you speak of. Right up my alley so to speak. I must
seek this out and give it a try.
Today, to clear my mind... I took a couple of quick missions
with the old bird. Again she performed very well.
My first run saw me getting bounced early in the mission by
diving (from the clouds) British Spitfires. Alas I got riddled
their very first pass, caught fire and had to bail. :'( I
never even got a shot in! >:(
On the second and last mission, I had the all clear to drop a
nice payload of bombs on some unsuspecting enemy tanks and
toasted them nicely, then while trying to make my way home got
bounced (again) by some Spitfires I had included in both
missions. My wingman was shot down immediately and I took some
hits too but managed to fake out the lead Spit by chopping
throttle and dropping flaps to slow very quickly and he had to
zoom past me in over-flight... and right in front of my massed
guns and this time he disintegrated into a blazing fireball.
His own wingman pulled up and away and I shoved my throttle to
the firewall and climbed with him for a second or two... long
enough to get a few rounds into him and get him smoking.
As he pulled up and away out of my ability to follow, I kept my
throttle full-on and dipped my nose for the ground in a 'balls
       to the walls' escape attempt.
I DID escape him! Ha! But then a blasted enemy ship's AA
gunners (I'd forgotten about them) set me afire right off the
coast and being too low to bail out I ended up plowing into the
sea at great speed and me and my crew perished in our impact to
       a watery grave.
Still, a very fun mission! ;) THIS is the sort of action and
playability I enjoy! Hats off to a sweet twin-engine
       plane...the Bf-110.
       S!

Very Good Beo..I flew this ship a bit last night in both IL-2
and EAW..It indeed is a good solid plane ..I like both the 110
and the IL-2 They are a good change from the fancy sport car
Spitfire types...Makes me want to try a different pane each day
just to expose myself to planes I wouldn't normally fly..
