friendly Ground Attack Aircraft. When NW of KARMANOVA sighted
group of 8+ IL2M bombers escorted by 4 Yak 7's. Flight leader
and his wingman engaged the lead Yak 7 while my wingman and I
dived onto the group of IL2M's. I closed to the leading IL2M to
within 100m and Fired a two second burst. I saw 20mm Strikes on
the enemy IL2 including the rear rudder separate from the
Vertical Stabiliser narrowly missing my canopy. I pulled up
vertical to loose speed and rolled and saw the IL2 descending
slowly crashing South East of KARMANOVA- I Claim 1 IL2M Damaged.
My wingman and I climbed to 4000ft and saw in the distance to
the west our flight leader shoot down a Yak 7 the aircraft was
observed descending in a violent dive on fire with the Starboard
wing separating just before impact with the ground. At this time
another Yak 7 was sighted at low altitude and I dived in for a
stern attack. Coming in too quickly I over shot rolling inverted
I saw my wingman deliver a 4 Second burst of 20mm which caused
the Yak to violently explode. Seconds after witnessing this kill
I saw another IL2M Coming in to attack Friendly Ground Units. I
positioned for another rear attack closing to within 50m. I
Fired all guns for a 3 second burst causing material to fall
from the IL2, Fuel was seen to be leaking and the engine was a
flame. I saw this Il2M crash south of Friendly Tanks in
KARMANOVA. I Claim 1 IL2M Destroyed. A short time later My
wingman and I climbed and searched for enemy aircraft North of
the town. No Further Enemy Aircraft were sighted. My Wingman and
I descended to 500ft and attempted to strafe two T-34 tanks in
KARMANOVA Causing minor Damage. Thick cloud base at 7000ft over
the Area. Landed safely at

pilot open this month's hunting season. I wish you a lot of fun.

Our mission was to cover a strike over the town of Karmanova. My
section took off without incident. We reached our objective and
began our combat air patrol over the village. It wasn't long
when we heard the call over our radios, "enemy bombers". We
sighted the bombers below us coming in from the east. I ordered
my wingman to attack.

I then saw an IL-2 bomber below me and made my attack. I dove
below the enemy plane and approached from its six o'clock
position. This helped cover me from his tail gunner. Once I was
within range, I opened up with my cannons and guns. Two pulls of
the trigger was all it took, the left wing separated from the
aircraft and it spun into the ground, exploding on impact.

I was able to attack four other enemy bombers with this tactic,
destroying all four. Then from seemly out of nowhere an enemy
fighter appeared in front of me. A Yak was heading strait for
me, head to head, its guns firing. I was able to move slightly
allowing his bullets' to pass by. I then returned fire. I saw my
rounds impact in the cockpit area. The enemy fighter rolled and
then spun into the ground. I saw no parachute.
I then saw another enemy bomber below me. As I began my attack
another Fw-190 made a gun run while my rounds were hitting the
enemy's aircraft. The enemy plane exploded in mid-air. I was
able to claim 1/2 kill here. I saw another "unmolested" enemy
bomber and attacked from below its six. Again, this plane fell
to the earth. As I was pulling away another enemy fighter caught
me by surprise, this time he was on my six.
I saw his tracer rounds flying past me. I also heard his bullets
hit my plane and engine. I still had control and my engine still
had power. I looped up and rolled over on top of my opponent. I
caught him in my sights and fired. His engine caught fire and he
went into an incontrollable spin. I saw one of his ailerons
falling away. The plane exploded when it hit the ground.

It was only now that I began feeling something was wrong with
me. My right arm and leg had been hit by his gun fire. The pain
began to creep in and I was seeing red through my eyes. I turned
for home. I was glad that the target area was not far from our
home base. When I was within radio distance I requested
emergency vehicles as I thought I might crack up on landing. As
I turned for my final approach my engine was running very rough
and my control movements were becoming very sluggish. I was able
to safely land and taxied off the runway to the HQ building
area. I shut down the engine and opened the canopy. The medics
pulled me from the cockpit and stopped the bleeding. I was then
rushed to the field hospital.

Notes: Haukka this was an excellent mission. I thoroughly
enjoyed this one. Well done. Normally I attach pics of my
battles and I have them ready to post, however my free imaging
site (ibbmg) is currently not allowing me access to my web site
albums as they claim there is some sort of security issue. So
when this issue gets resolved, I posts the pics at that time.

Thank you for your detailed report. When the news reached us
that you were wounded, the guys who were left on the ground here
at the base really worried a lot. We later learned that while
your injuries will scar your right arm and leg, your life is not
in danger at all. You will also spend time in the infirmary, you
are lucky. All guys want to go to the infirmary. You know what
all the pilots think: the maximum prize of this contest is that
a russian bullet grazes your leg, as it has happened to you, and
then having to rest a week or two in the infirmary, attended by
Olga, the nurse. Friend, everyone would like to be in your
place, when the beautiful Olga approaches your bed to bring you
a glass of milk. What a wonderful landscape, in the middle of
the frozen steppe!

I./JG.51 units with FW-190A-4 from Sychevka airfield, heading
approximately 060 °, to a small town called Karmanovo, where
several columns of armored vehicles from the Ninth Army are
pressuring the Russians to get them back to their lines. The
fighting down there is fierce. Our job will be a patrol to cover
our tanks.[/font]
We arrived in the area after a few minutes of flight. The front
is close, more than we would like. I am the leader of the second
pair of FW-190. The first two "Würger" have arrived a little
earlier and have started their CAP at the base of the clouds,
about 1000 meters high. With my point, we keep flying low, to
detect low entry of the enemy. A little later the squad leader
detects enemy contacts entering from the east. I can see in the
fog one, then two, then three Russian planes flying very low:
they are IL2. I immediately start the hunt, which will last
about ten minutes, shooting down several IL2 bombers. When the
Soviet attack is over, I return to base. Meanwhile, the other
FWs have drifted away from the area a bit, attracting the
attention of some Russian fighters: they all go into combat,
somewhere out of my visual range, but I can hear the entire
combat through the radio. One of our boys must have jumped, but
he was lucky, and he came down smoothly behind our lines. We
will send a kubelwagen to fetch it.

Second, canopy gets ripped of by air pressure on takeoff. Third,
Canopy incident becomes a distraction, and I neglect to raise my
landing gear. Fourth, my landing gear gets ripped off in a dive.
And there's how you get a slimmed-down, lightweight FW-190A4
fighter. And there's how real pilots get into real trouble. But
. . . [/font]

sans-serif]On with the mission:[/font]

sans-serif]Mostly followed the planned route to Karmanova,
veering a bit to enjoy the view, which is so much easier to do
without a canopy or silly bracing getting in the way! :P
Spotted multiple flights of IL2's and began the attack. If you
can stay dead-behind the Russian's vertical stabilizer he can't
shoot you without blowing off a piece of his own plane. And just
below the level of the enemy's tail I knew I'd be fairly safe
until close enough for my cannons to be effective. But that's
easier to say than do, as the pilot is not liken to those who
fly the large bombers in a straight line. The IL2 can dogfight,
and by Hitler, they WILL DO IT. In hindsight, B and Z tactics
would have faired better for my plane.[/font]
[font=Segoe UI Historic, Segoe UI, Helvetica, Arial,
sans-serif]Took a few hits from first target, but managed to
shoot down two planes in succession. The last IL2 I attacked
had a VERY skilled gunner and pilot, but I managed to score some
deflection shots, landing on or near the engine, and he began to
smoke. As I turned away I realized that I had also taken fire to
my engine and was losing power.[/font]

sans-serif]I attempted to land at a friendly field, but as the
power was seeming more consistent I decided to try to make it
home. About this time my last kill was confirmed. Just a few
more km's was all my plane had left in her, so I aimed her at a
flat hilltop and belly-landed, capsizing at low speed and
surviving mostly unharmed. [/font]

sans-serif]I claim 3 IL2M's, and apologize for needing the ride

I am so glad that you survived your first adventure in an FW-190
A-4. Anyway, to be very honest, and also fair, you took on the
difficult task of continuing the flight in totally adverse
conditions. Flying without the canopy in the dead of winter,
with freezing temperatures, is practically suicide. Remember the
next time you have an incident during takeoff, that you can
abort the flight and leave again. Everyone gets a second chance
if there are problems on takeoff. Anyway we will send a reindeer
sleigh in search of you.
