Plane of the Week: A 'Quick' Visit to the Old Hawker Hurricane

The sturdy and stalwart Hawker Hurricane, in all of it's
different Marks/Models, is a sort of 'forgotten' aircraft of
WW2. Yes, yes of course we interested in the war/air history
know it well, we gamers know it well, true... but to the great
masses of occasional historical toe-dippers, the unwashed public
in general usually watching Hollywood movies and so on and so
forth... well perhaps it's not so well known as the 'flashier'
types like Mustangs and Spitfires. And so on that note the
slower, less flashy Hurricanes usually do NOT get the lion's
share of the media, thus the public's, attention.
And that's too bad, for the Hurricane's role/contribution in/to
the war, in real-life history__was GREAT indeed!
It is doubtful if the Battle of Britain could have been won
'without' this aircraft. Indeed, as there were far fewer
Spitfires at the time the cleverly made yet brutishly strong
construction of the Hawker Hurri and it's smooth/simple
pilot-friendly handling traits and nimble combat characteristics
carried the load of that, and many other, savage air battles in
those dark, forbidding days.
To me, the Hurricane actually symbolizes the 'bull dog'
never-say-die attitude/look of the English spirit!
Yes, again the Spit (usually) got the big attention, and
deservedly so for it's own superb excellence, but the Hurricane
was there all along, often in the background, slugging along,
hammering away, doing near perfect Yeoman service for it's
country. England certainly got it's bang for the buck out of
the old Hurricane. No doubt about it.
And wow but there were HUGE amounts of modifications (both field
and factory) to this bird!
Was there nothing this old design couldn't do/handle? __I doubt
it!
Not only were there so many versions of this fantastic design
but it was flown by SO MANY countries around the world! Truly
it was an international bird of war!
Below is a fantastic experimental (a fave of mine) color scheme
of which there were apparently thousands of such color schemes
for this great war bird, both experimental 'and' frontline used
schemes.

In IL2 I have flown the Hurricane extensively (especially back
in the early days) and always had good results with it. And
yes, I've sadly gotten many deaths in it as well, for if not
flown correctly or rather wisely, the enemy fighters WILL eat it
for lunch. Still, it is fun to fly, handles beautifully, looks
bad-arse and will do the job for you if you do YOUR part and
fly/fight realistically using the aircraft's great strengths to
your advantage and keep a cool head. (A good wingman is a good
idea as well! Ha!)
Yes, as the war and the world moved on, air to air combat moved
'away' from the Hurricane, yet it could still and often did hold
it's own in war-ravaged skies. And though it became a bit long
in the tooth for direct air battle, it merely switched over to
and took up ground pounding with a vengeance and again gave
Yeoman service in that respect whether shooting
machineguns/cannon, dropping bombs, firing rockets, scouting out
targets, and so on... it continued to carry the battle to the
enemies of Great Britain and the Allies.
If you haven't flown the old Hawker in the game (or haven't in a
long while) I suggest you load her up and take her out for a
nice spin and or a battle or two. You'll get good service.

She's a great and docile kite to fly. No vices, an honest plane,
no tricks to learn before you entry the cockpit.
The old fashioned wing, with a thick profile, was a blessing,
because it kept receiving any weapons arrangement, and later,
any types of bombs, rockets or heavy cannon that the wing spars
could carry.

As you both have said, this is a great plane to fly. It is
particularly suitable for people getting started in the game. I
think the first thing I did when I installed many years ago was
to jump into a P-51D, swerve around the runway, get into the
air, then stall the first time I tried to make a turn.
The Hurricane is pretty forgiving while you learn to fly. Like a
good sports car, when things start to go wrong you can feel it
and make corrections.
And you will not be at a loss to find missions or campaigns for
the aircraft. It served in just about every theater or war in
WW2 and in just about every role. I have never felt completely
outmatched in a Hurricane, expect perhaps in an early PTO
campaign against Zeros. The Spitfire is the iconic plane of the
Battle of Britain, but there were many more Hurricanes playing
their part in that conflict.
