       Day Of Defeat (on Steam)

Okay, there's two Day Of Defeat games... the much older/original
one, named Day of Defeat, and then the slightly newer one named,
       Day of Defeat Source.
I have both, but prefer the newer Source one due to improved
graphics and some other gaming improvements though I must say I
liked the weapon selections on the older version better.
Anyway, since I got my Steam account back up, I've played DOD
Source a few times and there has been some changes (far as I can
see) with the player base... surprisingly there's still several
servers offering various modded/unmodded versions of the game...
but a lot of them are filled with decidedly 'odd' people.
       :-\
I say odd, meaning a lot are now playing with Bots, which I get
as numbers of live people have fallen away the bots sort of help
fill the empty holes... I don't particularly LIKE playing with
the bots (seems bots on my side are always really stupid but
bots on the enemies side are supermen, g'ah), but it doesn't
bother me THAT much either way. Other what I would call 'odd'
folk are people on coms that SCREAM a lot (sound like teenie
kids) and others that never say a word (silent types) and then
there's still the whack-o's that cheat. But, by and large I did
manage to find a handful of nice servers that if not
particularly friendly (like in the old days) did at least seem
       level and fair.
Play is surprisingly smooth and good. This was always thus even
in the old days of regular DOD... but even MORE improved now...
especially if you work it to find a GOOD server with a nice low
PING RATE. There's been no developer work on this in AGES but
there are several third party made new maps. But weapons, game
play, etc are all the same as they ever was so meaning it was
easy for me to fall into solid combat play.
No, my 'twitch' moves aren't as good as they once was...
however, my past experience shows very well against obviously
much younger opponents especially on the old maps/game setups
that came stock with the game as I know/remember every square
inch of those maps by heart and know ALL of the ambush/troop
gathering spots. And though I may not be as fast on the
trigger...my shots are just as deadly as they ever were.
This is NOT a realistic game by any means. Back in the day a
lot of us older hands DID try hard to make at least
semi-realistic playing... but alas that simply doesn't exist any
more evidently. The game makes it hard to do so as it was of
course designed for 'twitch' play from the get-go.
Still, it's mindless fun and an easy way to kill a few hours of
       time.
All of the maps (the remaining ones I've found anyway) are
simply Capture The Flag. You jump in, attempt to swarm enemy
with numbers and firepower and try to grab the various flags
from them while of course defending your own flag positions.
You have to contend with enemy snipers, machinegun positions,
anti-tank infantry, regular infantry (with hand grenades) and so
on. And it can get sticky quickly.
*I DO love using the old WW2 style weapons; USA side are
       Thompson SMG's, M-1 Carbines, BAR's, Browning Medium
machineguns, Bazooka's. Basically the same for the German side
except using near identical 'German style' weapons, I.E. Mp-40
       SMG's, MG-42's etc.
There IS recoil, and it DOES affect accuracy. As does distance.
As does the weapon type, for instance you cannot STAND up and
shoot a BAR accurately at distance...you won't hit shat! But,
in the prone position you can rip the enemy a new one with some
       greatly improved precision.
With the Garand battle rifle though... you can do very well at
long range standing, moving, crouched and or prone.
Buttstock to the face can kill...and beware the DEADLY German
trenching tool (ouch!) and in some games there a beat-to-death
FIST option where you can pound your enemy's face in with your
       bare knuckles...lol.
Explosions are authentic looking. Lots of
thunder/fragments/smoke and flash. Yes, you can die from a
fall, so leaping off tall places can kill you. What they used
to call Rag Doll affects show blown up people SAILING thru the
air as if 'rag dolls' with arms and flaying legs akimbo.
Helmets get blown off and you are bare headed till respawn.
All in all this old game STILL impresses me. Worth a look if
you like 'sort of unrealistic Capture the Flag' WW2 style
playing that's fast-paced and pretty rowdy. Again, the play is
(at least for me on my subpar system, SMOOTH as a baby's bottom.
       Few if any hiccups.
       S!

Okay, I'm playing this game fairly frequently... not too many
servers still up for it on Steam but enough to eventually find a
good ping where play is good. Of course by now you're going to
run into two main groups of players... BAD ARSE due to playing
it for years... and TOTAL NOOBS that don't know their arse hole
from a hole in the ground.
       :D
Either group can give you grief...lol. But if you push on you
can still have some fun gameplay.

I also played a lot of DOD, less DOD Source, because in the
beginning there were a lot of bugs that for some people allowed
       to cheat.
I played DOD again recently in solo against the bots and I loved
to hear the voices again in the game.
The worst map in multiplayer was for me the landing where
playing American was suicide if the German players were good.
But I have only good memories of it.
Living in France and because of the time difference between our
       two countries.
It's going to be difficult for me to meet you in game my dear
       Beowolff,
       Take care of yourself.
