Mission results week 49
By: larsresult Date: November 29, 2020, 3:04 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Date flown 29/11/20
Vpmodpack
North Africa target AAA ship
Results 0 points. Killed.
Debrief
Two Hurricanes collided before I took off. Followed the map
route over the ridge then was confused which ship to attack. As
I circled enemy planes appeared which the Hurricanes tackled. I
thought target ships first then attack the planes. I strafed two
ships and realised what felt wrong. My HUD was not showing so I
had to judge the height of attack by eyeball. On my second
strafe I hit a ship mast and cartwheeled in.
The lack of HUD may have been my faulty VPmod setup, recently
upset by a download. Anyway I would probably have got the same
result.
First flight in a Beaufighter. A pleasure to fly.
Good choice again Haukka.

Pilot - DHumphrey
Mission - Week 49
Date Flown - 11/29/2020
Aircraft Type - Beaufighter Mk21
Armed - 8x Rockets
Target - AAA Cruiser
After Action Review (AAR):
Took off with my Flight of 4x Beaufighters, all armed with 8x
rockets. Once we were off the ground I ordered my Flight to
tighten up our formation to the target. We followed the given
flight plan. At the target area a group of Hurricanes were
attempting to engage and destroy a Fi-156 Storch. They were
having trouble.
HTML https://i.ibb.co/nLm7ckK/Nov-29-2020-10-43-44-PM.jpg
I then located our primary target and order my Flight to "Attack
Ships". I then dove down to sea level and made my attack. I
lined up with the center of the Cruiser and pushed in. The
Cruiser's AAA guns were tracking me, however they were shooting
over my head. I pushed in close and launched my rockets. They
all hit and I got a "ship destroyed" message. I then pulled up
over the target and began my exit, I caught some minor flak in
my starboard wing.

HTML https://i.ibb.co/rMkj1tK/Nov-29-2020-10-50-19-PM.jpg
I was still in good shape. As I climbed I ran into a gaggle of
4x Ar-196 float planes. I turned my plane into them and fired in
a head-on position. I was able to destroy three of them. I then
turned for home when we were attacked by 4x Bf-110s. I was able
to maneuver my aircraft and was able to get a shot at one of
them. I was able to shoot it down severing its starboard wing
from the fuselage.
HTML https://i.ibb.co/dtc6Pdk/Nov-29-2020-11-01-58-PM.jpg
I then turned for home as my gun ammo was gone. I was made it
back to our home base, the Bf-110s turned and headed back to
where ever they came from. I safely landed and taxied to a
hanger for repairs.

This was a great mission with lots of action, I really enjoyed
it !!! :) My overall score was, one AAA Cruiser destroyed and
four enemy aircraft shot down (3x Ar-196 float planes and 1x
Bf-110), total 1200 points.

You did well, Lars! You have flown with more realism than you
usually are used to, and that has made things more difficult,
but also more realistic. Anyway, to do this job well without
having the HUD activated, you have to know the plane and its
instruments well, and be used to them. This is as if you had
just enrolled in the RAF pilot school, and the next minute you
were at the controls of your twin-engine, pointing at a ship
without really knowing how high you are or how fast you are
going. That's a bit excessive, especially since you don't
usually fly that way. I think that in such a case it is best
that you correctly configure the HUD of your VPmodpack, and fly
the mission again, calm and without pressure, and with the HUD
that you know. I think you deserve that opportunity. This is not
the Grand Prix of rigor, the goal is to enjoy, and with what you
know, so I invite you to repeat the exercise. You can consider
the first mission as a preliminary training. Anyway, we will
continue to fly this plane throughout December, so we will
become familiar with it.
The brief is not specific, it does not say which ship to attack,
therefore any of the ships and boats that you find in the area
is a possible target. You will also find other targets of
opportunity: some objects on the ground, where the landing of
supplies is prepared, it is also possible that you will see some
small observation aircraft and some seaplanes. And the Bf.110
will appear as well, but I have calculated that they will arrive
a few minutes after you find and attack the fleet, that will
give you time to return safely. Therefore, it is important that
you do not linger in the attack zone. The main idea is to make
an entrance, at most two, and go back home. It is also important
that you have the flight orders for your pilots well configured:
this can help you if the enemy attacks you. ;)
***********************
DHumphrey, your mission is excellent. It's like a cake with a
cherry on top, and the cherry is the Bf.110 you sent to the
fiery sands. We are happy about your participation in this
contest, and we hope it will be an encouragement for other
pilots to come and participate.
See You soon, Gentlemen.

Thank you Haukka for your kind words and the chance to refly. I
have reloaded my VPmodpack without the 'bugs'. I loaded a modded
aircraft and it must have corrupted the old Vpmodpack when I
added it. My fault as others have loaded it successfully.

Sadly I had the same result. Killed with Nil points.
I deleted my corrupted Vpmodpack, reinstalled my back up
complete with Whistler's NgHUD3.5, and took off in my
Beaufighter. I ordered my flight to close up and we swept in to
strafe the ships. I peppered two with hits but received no
credit. I then turned to attack the Ar196s but was killed by one
of their rear gunners from the below left quarter before I could
finish him off. Ah well, at least I tried.
I later continued a Romanian AF campaign in the Hurricane 1
which had been going well. Alas today I was killed thrice with
only half a kill to show for it! I should have stayed in bed.
lol. Tomorrow is another day.

Lars,
Sorry to hear about your mission result, take heart there will
be another next week and you'll get chance once again. You did
well on this mission, you got some good shots in before you
bought the farm. One thing to remember is that these AI tail
gunners are all to deadly, that's why I made my attacks from the
head on position. One of my wingmen was blown from the sky
making a tail-on attack as well.
So, don't get down, we'll blow those hun bastages to hell next
week. :)

I totally agree with DHumphrey. This is the bread and butter of
a virtual pilot. Sometimes things go well and we go home, and
other times we get hit by a magnetic bullet from a sniper
gunner, and the light goes out. I think you have done well. You
have flown, you have chosen targets, you have attacked. Forget
the result in points. I think that what has happened to you is
very positive, because now you will review your way of
attacking, and that will redound to your benefit. The result in
experience is much more valuable.
Then I will prepare a very simple mission for you to put these
things into practice. However, the main line of work has already
been given to you by DHumphrey, and that is the most
recommended. With a little practice in the right direction, you
will see that it is all a matter of method.
Lubricate your engines, brave pilot, you will soon be at the
controls of the Beaufighter again. ;)

Date single mission actually flown: Wednesday, December 02, 2020
Results/description of mission: fallen in the line of duty
Mission Score: I don't remember, but I have two ships and two
planes on my list.
Misc. Info if desired: debrief:
Mission flown in VPmodpack. Normal takeoff after watching a
Hurricane make a forced landing near the runway. The four
Beaufighters made our way without delay to the planned area.
After takeoff, we lowered the power to 75% and the pitch to 75%,
with the radiators fully open, and our engines appreciated it.

After six minutes of flight, I saw the formation of enemy ships
carrying out approach maneuvers to the coast. I went to the
largest ship I saw, and discovered that it was some kind of
Italian destroyer. It wasn't the best target, but it was the
biggest. I fired two rockets at him and caused a good mess on
deck. Some sailors jumped into the water.
HTML https://i.postimg.cc/VL9SmxrF/page1.jpg
I immediately headed for a torpedo boat, and handed it two nice
rockets. The boat flew through the air.

HTML https://i.postimg.cc/1XBZYrXD/il2fb-2020-12-03-00-49-54-66.jpg[/img]
I did a wide circuit to find another objective. Only now did I
remember to order my pilots to attack the ships. I could see a
Storch passing under me. I headed for a raft that was rushing to
shore. I handed him two more rockets. This raft also exploded.
This time the sailors were less lucky.
HTML https://i.postimg.cc/44mj9czK/page2.jpg
This is the precise moment where I should have headed home. But
the adrenaline of combat clouded my thoughts. I lost the notion
of time. My right engine was smoking. I decided to make a risky
visit to the coast. There I saw two transport hydroplanes. I
aimed at the first one and this one caught fire instantly. I
made a very low turn over the desert, heading for the second
seaplane, which had the same luck as the first.
HTML https://i.postimg.cc/fbQ0xYtM/page3.jpg
I considered the situation and decided that enough was enough. I
had to get out of there as soon as possible. I headed home. I
flew over the burning coastal town, and a little later I saw a
silhouette in the clouds. I was pretty sure it was a Bf.110. I
started a risky chase, totally inadvisable. This is when we
should say like on those tv shows: "don't try this at home."
[img width=1024
height=317]
HTML https://i.postimg.cc/DfckFhd6/il2fb-2020-12-03-01-14-51-10.jpg[/img]
I was pretty sure I could catch up with it, but my damaged
engine was starting to fatigue. Meanwhile, the two friends of
the German were already taking position at my six, but with such
poor rear visibility that the Beaufighter has, I did not realize
this.

height=323]
HTML https://i.postimg.cc/PxYBcsKg/il2fb-2020-12-03-01-17-54-65.jpg[/img]
I felt some sharp knocks and a loud noise of broken wood and
sheet metal. For a second I thought I could escape, but it was
just wishful thinking. My plane turned upside down and fell like
a leaf. My rear gunner was killed on the spot. I tried to
parachute, but the wreckage fell on me and became my tombstone.
[img width=864
height=768]

As I fell, I could see projected on the desert, the silhouettes
of the three Bf. 110. They reminded me of sharks circling prey.
This has been the most obvious demonstration of the danger of
staying longer than expected when attacking a target. The enemy
heavy fighters had time to get close to the area and do their
job. I will put a note on the refrigerator door to remind myself
that the next time I have an engine in emergency, it is best to
leave the area and return to base. It was a great mission
anyway. I think I still have sand in my ears.
