My wingmen used the catapult but I chickened out and made my
high speed run down the deck. I will probably be docked some pay
for disobeying orders. I was worried I would hit the catapult
but I lifted off okay. It was very hard to see in the dark but I
managed to keep my leader in my gunsight all the way to the
target. I could not see anything but saw and heard the flak from
both sides on the way there. I wasn't sure if it was the USN
shooting at the USMC at first lol. As we swept in the green flak
intensified. I missed with the bombs and circled around to
locate the flak guns. Fired rockets at what I hoped were guns
and claimed one destroyed. Pulled away and was informed of an
enemy bomber nearby. I circled back to try and catch him.
Briefly saw an H8K then lost him in the clouds. The flak was
starting to hit me as I looked for him so I made one strafing
run and destroyed a second flak gun. Both claims were more luck
than judgement as it was so dark down there. By now my engine
was running rough and fuel was leaking so I headed home. Engine
quit as I reached friendly territory so I bailed.

You have done an extraordinary mission, Lars, because you have
hit the mark in conditions that were not planned. Let me
explain: the same thing happened to you that happened to me on
that occasion when everything was dark for me, and that was due
to flying in VP Modpack, where the dawn light does not
correspond to the stock installation or to others, except with
Ypack, who shares the same degree of illumination, at least on
the same map, on the same mission. It's very dark there too, and
it wasn't the command's intention for you to fly in such adverse
conditions. Now I have edited the mission in VP Modpack, and I
have adjusted the time so that the luminosity corresponds to
that of other versions. Maybe now it's too daytime. I invite you
to fly it again, if you like. The mission has a name that
differentiates it from the previous one. If any of you want to
fly this mission in Ypack, this is the version that corresponds.
Anyway, Lars, I think you've achieved an excellent result.
       Congratulations.

Thanks Haukka. I may leave it as I survived at least. I must
admit I was mostly firing blind, trying to hit the origins of
       the green flak tracer.
Von and I found that dusk or dawn settings change abruptly from
dark to light or light to dark with no gradual inbetween.

Target fixation was my undoing. I took off ok, and followed my
leader as Haukka suggested. Like Lars said, it was very dark and
I could not see any targets, though I could identify the AA
positions based on their tracers. I dropped my bombs in the
general area of the leader and got a couple trucks. Sheer luck
and nothing more. I came back for another pass and was using the
rockets on the AA positions. I got fixated on one of the targets
and was too low to pull up.

       Mission: Assault on Angaur
       November 17, 2020
Thank you Lars and Von for the willingness to fly into that dark
hell. As I said, I have stopped flying VPmodpack for these
missions due to the problem with the lack of light. In stock
that does not happen. Since I have seen that Von also flew the
normal version in VP, I did too. So we were all in the same
       conditions.
It was really dark. I waited for everyone to take off, and then
I did. I went flying low towards the shots. I took height over
Angaur, until the AAA began to mark me. I dropped my bombs and
my rockets in the dark. I managed to eliminate two artillery. I
attacked a third, my rockets missed the target, I was very low,
I pulled the lever very hard to avoid hitting the trees, my
plane lost control and I crashed. End of this sad mission.
I invite you to fly the specific version for VP, so you will see
the difference between one and the other. If some other brave
dare, the missions are there to be flown. Be good.

I think if you change the timing of the raid on VPmod you should
get a lighter mission. I feel very lucky that I survived this
one considering what you guys did.
       Let there be light!

Exact! That's what I have done with this mission so that it can
be flown in VP Modpack, I have delayed the mission start by an
hour. You can download that version only for VP modpack in reply
       1 of this conversation. ;)

Successful cat launch from carrier, flew to target, took some
light machinegun AA going in with minor damage, dropped my bombs
successfully and scored hits on a couple of Japanese AA units
then suddenly took a DIRECT enemy AA hit and exploded into a
flaming fireball...no chance to bail out and of course died
       instantly. Bad luck there!
I continue to be dogged with some bad luck on these Pacific
       Carrier missions...g'ah!

Good morning Beowolff! I agree with you that the attack on
Angaur has been one of Peleliu's most difficult missions. Our
results are identical there: two antiaircraft destroyed and
twelve points. Nice try! And a good flight next time!

For sure my friend these are HAIRY missions... and mostly due to
the poor lighting/vision, I guess the time of day and the smoke
haze all around (maybe some natural fog too, dunno!). Very hard
for me to SEE the island even, and especially hard to find and
       fire upon enemy targets!
And the enemy AA is vicious! Like screaming demons they fight
to the death with multiple gun positions/spewing deadly
ammunition in all directions and the occasional enemy fighter
cover makes matters even worse when they decide to show up.
       Hellish!
Though I have enjoyed the intensity of these missions so far,
perhaps I can honestly say I am about good and ready to be
transferred to another campaign somewhere ELSE. LOL!
       :D
       Beo
