Mission Results 2020 Week 45

First of all, thanks Haukka for choosing this mission. I was a
big fan of PhilK back in the day and this is a good one. I did
not do very well, but it was a great mission.
Mission: Palau attack by PhilK
Flown in VP Modpack (Bat did not work; I suspect a loadout
issue. If anyone wants to fly this in Bat let me know and I will
see if I can update it)
Date 1 November 2020
Results 75 pts and I even survived (details below)

Briefing:
PhilK's mission are among the most immersive you will ever
experience. I took off from my carrier and headed to Palau,
which was already under heavy attack.

I dropped my NAPALM and hit nothing, nada, bupkis. I did,
however, get hit by flak. The flak hit caused a fuel leak and
some loss of controls.

I am unlikely to make a carrier landing under the best of
circumstances, so I flew as close to a US Navy ship as I could
and bailed out.

I have no idea how or why I earned 75 points though.

Flown in Vpmodpack at midnight 2nd November 2020.
I was going to use Ypack123 but couldn't get it to load
properly.
Palau attack.
Results. 2 Artillery destroyed 26points. Dead.
Debrief. I have not learned carrier take offs yet so I used
autopilot to get airborne. Then I followed my wingmen to the
island. I remembered we had to hit the rear of the hill from
behind so I flew over the island, hoping the flak would miss me,
and circled back. Flak was intense as I came near the crest of
the hill and I bombed what I thought were buidlings. It turned
out they were artillery emplacements and I destroyed two of
them. I left in a cloud of flak but my luck held. I managed to
return to the carrier but as I can't land I decided to bail out
to be rescued. Sadly, I forgot to climb and bailed too low, hit
the water and died. How stupid after surviving all the flak.
Good choice Haukka.

Excellent, you guys are doing very well. PhilK is certainly a
Master. And I am an intruder, because I have put my hand in
his mission, touching things and adding others. I
see you guys are flying well in VP Modpack, thanks for testing
the mission there. I no longer fly VP Modpack for these contest
missions, since that time when my morning was much darker than
yours.
This aircraft takes off very well from aircraft carriers, even
at full load, which is saying a lot. In the first tests I took
off with the catapult, but then I discovered that the AI took
off normally without using it, so I did not use it later.
Anyway. Lars, you gave me a good reason to make a little video
to show you how to safely leave the deck.
Thank you for participating, Gentlemen. Von and Lars are already
on vacation now until next week. Who will be the next brave who
will fight for their country? ;)

Actual Mission Name: HELL IN PELELIU
Date single mission actually flown: Friday, November 6, 2020
Results/description of mission: MISSION COMPLETE,
Mission Score: 168 points, seven trucks and one AAA
Misc. Info if desired: debrief:
I decided to fly this mission at once before it got too late, or
the Japanese got too strong. I chose Ypack1.2.3 for the job. I
always get a surprise when I change my version: this time, my
partner didn't want to move until I did it first. As he insisted
on giving me first place, I opted to move to the catapult to
shoot off into action.
After a few minutes of flight we saw the island covered in
fires. We made a first entry at a low altitude as planned in the
brief, to overcome the island at its lowest part, while we
identified the area that we should attack shortly after.
We quickly moved away from the coast, flying very low, skimming
the waves, and shortly after we began the wide turn to the left
that would take us back to the island. I immediately saw the
Wildcat guys lining up for the attack. The flak began to mark
them strongly. I did not entertain myself with the show and I
focused on my goal. Soon I saw a group of cabins or makeshift
roofs, I think I also saw a truck. I assumed that was the goal
and dropped all my napalm there. The confirmation came
immediately, a thick column of black smoke began to rise into
the sky.
After that we made two more passes, while I was following a
colleague to have him more controlled in my airspace. I was able
to destroy an antiaircraft, and give a good scare with my
cannons to the Japanese gunners who from a nest of machine guns,
challenged me waving their handkerchiefs: "here Tony, we are
here!", They seemed to say ...
That island looks like an anthill, possibly needs a napalm
booster. It's just an idea...
When our work was done, we returned to the ships,. There were
several accidents on the return: one of my guys lost a wheel in
the attack, and then he had an accident in the landing. Then
another colleague fell into the sea. I made three attempts: in
the first I had to abort because another boy got in front and
entered first, in the second I was coming very fast and had to
suspend the maneuver, and in the third attempt I could not hook
and fell into the dark waters, riddled with sharks. Soon enough
the deck crew descended a nautical ladder and I was rescued. I
was very lucky. It seems we all need more carrier landing
practice.

We need more brave pilots wanting to put their butt in that
hell. Next Sunday the new mission leaves. You still have time.

Well done Haukka. It was difficult to identify the targets
amongst all the smoke. But then so it was in RL.

Okay... LOL... what a cluster frack this turned out to be! :D
???
First couldn't get the darn Catapult to work on my carrier...
yes, it's turned on but simply couldn't get the hang of taking
off with it. (can I get some serious schooling on this? I used
to do it all the time now I've turned brain daft! )
Finally, thru the luck of the Irish (and I'm not Irish) I 'did'
manage to actually takeoff without smashing into the sea and
being ground into hamburger meat by my own ship. Pure luck and
VERY VERY close call...but did it. I thought my other guy was
in charge since he insisted to take off before me, so I followed
him aimlessly around in huge circles before finally figuring
out I'd have to take the leading hand and follow map to target.
Missed with my firebombs (of course) so dropped down for
straffing run and did finally nail an enemy
fighter...hahaha...except got my engine shot up and had to
ditch. Got picked up by a US sub but no party in the officer's
club for ME tonight!

Wondering... have I always been so sucky and just didn't know it
or have I just become sucky as of late?
:-[

S! Thanks to Master E69 for this tough-as-nails mission! ;)

Beo, launching from a carrier can be daunting at times ...
here's how I make it happen.
1. Taxi to the CAT then apply "chalks", that should get you
ready to launch.
2. Lock tail wheel
3. Drop flaps, take-off flaps without bombs, landing flaps -
with bombs, rockets, or both.
4. Full throttle
5. Open radiator
6. Release chalks
7. As your thrown off the carrier keep steady, pulling up gently
on the elevator. Once you begin to gain altitude, raise your
gear. Let the plane
build some speed then you can raise your flaps.
This process seems to work for me just about 98% of the time.
Good Luck :)

Spot on, my friend!!!! ^^^ Thanks a zillion. I was actually
doing all of the above and still crashing until I read your kind
info and realized I was NOT locking my tail wheel. On
re-entering the mission with all of the above including the
locked tail wheel...viola! I was off the deck in fine style.
(sadly the mission had already been completed so I can't count
any new results! Whaaaa!
Thanks again for your kind help on this. My old, tired brain
simply couldn't remember all of the needed steps! Whoops!
??? ;D
In case I forget again, and/or to help others, DH I've added

Good morning Boss! I see that you are seriously flying these
missions to catch up, at this rate you will catch up with us in
... let me see ... a week, maybe two... Take it easy. You will
need this procedure that DHumphrey has shown you during the next
three Peleliu missions. I think you will enjoy them. I'm so glad
to see you're back to the stick. Have a good day!
