The Cold War... what I grew up in. Ridiculous 'duck and cover'
drills against a thermo-nuclear missile or atom bomb... jeeze.

The speech is likely to slip on the political controversy, which
is always to be avoided in these forums. However, in the face of
these memo notes which you wittily reproduce, I cannot help but
comment with some facts of which I was recently informed.
My mother's caregiver is Georgian, and lived in the former
Soviet Union, only to find herself "free" in the current
republic. Well, she tells me that in the days of socialism she
and her family of four lived in an apartment of their own,
purchased by her father on favorable terms, like all his
contemporaries who had a job (so, no cohabitation!). About the
latter, she says that everyone had (and had to have) a job, and
if someone went around during working hours they were stopped
and questioned by the police. They never made queues for bread
or any other kind of consumption. Large plots of land (equipped,
like the "farm houses" of fascist Italy) were given by the
government to anyone who requested it, so that it could be
cultivated. The study was compulsory until the high school
diploma, encouraging the continuation of studies up to the
degree. Of course, these studies were completely free and the
books were provided by the state.
It came spontaneous to me to ask why, if everything was going so
well, the socialist regime fell, and she told me that Russian
supremacy was powerful, and manifested itself in all aspects of
social life; for example the official language was Russian, and
only thanks to the ability of Shevardnadze (who was Georgian)
was Georgian admitted as a second language. The independence
pushes were strong. With the fall of the Soviet empire, it was
natural for Georgia to separate.
Now that they are "free", however, only a few in her city have
remained to work in the manganese mine (which is no longer a
state owned, but belongs to a magnate of the Russian industry)
which is its only resource. Many have been forced to emigrate to
survive. No young person has the money to buy the house anymore.
Those born after the 90s are semi-literate and have difficulty
putting their signature.

This is VERY interesting, GB ^^^. I am (and sure others are
also or will be) intrigued by your informative story.
Do not worry... yes, on most forums such might be construed as
political conversation that would be banned because of other
folk wanting to disagree and argue... HERE we will not have
that problem.
Here we are adults (no matter our age) and will conduct
ourselves as adults... here we are friends and will conduct
ourselves as friends... we can speak, as adults, and as
friends, upon any subject (that is decent to speak of, of
course) that may come to mind. And as adults and friends we can
listen to whatever is said, or... we cannot. We can agree with
what is said, or...simply no opinion upon it whatsoever... or...
we can even disagree as long as we do not become stupidly
violent/vengeful/attacking/hateful.
We do not have gags (within common manners/courtesy/friendly
consideration.) Free speech here is encouraged (under the same
guidelines.)
If there is a doubt about a subject being TOO political, TOO
anything, by all means members would be encouraged to ASK openly
or by PM myself and or the other members here what their
thoughts are upon the subject. Otherwise a person's own
manners/upbringing about what is right/wrong should control
their mouths.
Truly we are a private club, and as such may conduct ourselves
as one. A gentleman's club to be sure, where all is expected to
act civil, yet is free to be expressive as long is it is not
vengeful/hateful to others.
Anyone going over the line should already know it before they do
it...but if they don't, I will gently remind them. Only as a
last resort to protect common courtesy and decency might I be
forced to become involved in a harsh manner... I do not expect
that to happen.
Anyway... just wanted to explain my feeling upon the subject.
Your post here is wonderful and fully informative and 100
percent supported. Thank you for it.
