Great site History of War, I've bookmarked it from ages,
especially for UK units info.
Interesting database at ww2db, mainly for photographs, most of
which I'd never seen before:

Hello Greybeard,
On the ww2 data base web site, click on the "Events" tab, this
will bring you to a page that will start showing you the many
different battles during the war and their theaters.
As an example, once on that page click "Europe", this will take
you to a list of battles fought in that theater. Click on any
conflict listed and it will open to a good synopses of what
occurred. If you scroll to the bottom of that conflict age,
you'll see a day-to-day action list of what happened.
The site also has a lot of information on the equipment used
during the war for both Allied and Axis forces.

old site but a ton of info... I stumbled across it (again) at
M4T just today and grabbed the link that I'd long forgotten.
HTML http://www.joebaugher.com/
By the way, I'm going to sticky this link page so we don't
easily cover them up forget them... if you have additional links
to important info sites, go ahead and tack them on here.

Yes I agree. Joe Baugher's site is fantastic if you need to
research exactly which US manufactured aircraft - by serial
number - were distributed to which units.Very helpful for
detailed research.List every US manufactured aircraft during WW2
!
