Tell: Lavender Eyes
---------------------------------------------------------
The experience at the hospital has definitely left Idi a little
rattled. She had summoned the odd ghost in her day, but actually
traversing an Avernian gate? Being shunted into Twilight? These
were experiences she had never had before, and they were rather
uncomfortable ones.
It was a discomfort the Doctor was soon to be intimately aware
of, through no fault of his own. Idi enters the apartment, takes
off her shoes, walks into the living room looking for the
Doctor. If he isn’t there, she continues to look through each
room until she does locate him.
Once located, provided he’s not on the toilet or in the shower
or some similar other compromising position, she makes sure he
knows she’s there -- with a knock on the door, the wall, his
shoulder, whichever is most convenient.
And then she dumps her recent experience into his head, without
ceremony. He will simply acquire the memories as if they were
his own: The nerve-wracking anxiety of the interview, the
confusion of being in Twilight, the urge to hunt the snake --
the experience of finding the man in the room, reading the
chart. Being told to ask about What Sleeps. Everything.
She is very direct, but also considerate -- in her way. She
gives him a moment to adjust to the absolute brainblast that is
the telepathic equivalent of barging into the room babbling at a
mile a minute.

He'd only gotten in a few minutes before her, since he'd had
work but wasn't waylaid by jaunts through Twilight and the
Underworld, himself. So, she basically gets in, sees he's not
even changed yet (it was one of those days where he just wanted
to get out of there rather than changing there), more or less
collapsed in a chair with the TV on, and then hits him with an
influx of her day.
The doctor's eyes widen a little, and then his brow furrows,
then he frowns slightly, and then he gives her a rather...
cautious sort of look. Certainly a way to start his evening. It
takes him a minute but he does start to respond.
"Sounds like someone decided you should cut the queue," he says,
considering that for a moment. "Though if you're not..." he then
stops a moment, can she lie with that sort of communication,
send an altered memory of acceptance rather than disgust about
the concept? Probably best to just take her at face value for
now, especially if she was brought to this point to begin with.
"Nevermind. What Sleeps," he drums his fingers on the armrest
for a moment. "It's the first entity I forged a Pact with. More
than that, it's one that I'm currently in a Pact with," he
starts off.
Of course he imagines that's not why she was urged to ask about
it. "That Pact... well, it sounds like you were given the basic
rundown, about how certain forms of evil in the world, the worst
kinds of it, they taint a soul," tapping his lower chest as if
to gesture at his own soul.
"When a tainted soul cycles back into the world, the taint
remains, and the likelihood of it forging an even worse sort of
person gets higher each time. What Sleeps, though, is an entity
deep within the Underworld, within the darkest depths of the
Ocean of Fragments. It can take in those souls, purify them into
energy, and thus remove it from the 'pool,' so to speak. It's
ultimately a drop in the bucket, but it's something, and the
more it's done, the more that people understand this, the more
of an influence it has on the world."
Another moment. "That ritual I was gathering salt for. It's to
create a vessel that can hold those tainted souls, so they can
be passed on to What Sleeps." He's watching her reaction VERY
closely

She listens to him in his entirety, but is left wanting more
answers. Not about what he’s doing, or why he’s doing it. She
has those answers, now, and they are that which they are: her
reaction is one not of ambivalence or apathy, but lack of
concern. There isn’t even a hint of ew or how could you. She
seems to think that he’s building up to something with this
whole soul-cleansing business -- and is surprised when the
soul-cleansing business is what he was building up to.
That’s it?
Of course she thinks abusers need to be purged from the mystical
gene pool, so to speak. But she wants to know how this man is
going ot be punished for his crimes against his wife. There’s a
mild hint of concern for the wife’s well being, but
overwhelmingly? She’s a predator and she cannot express how much
she wants this man to be prey.
Is he absolved in this process? What price does he pay for his
abuse? Does the doctor only perform this soul-cleansing rite
when someone comes into the hospital, or are arrangements made
for abusers to wind up in the hospital so that they can be
cleansed?
So many questions. None of them have anything to do with
accepting the morality of his actions.

Gavin looks... pleased with her mental response. Obvious
tenseness is replaced with a bit of a smile. Clearly he finds
these to be easier questions than 'what is your special jar
for,' for his own reasons.
"People don't tend to last long without their soul. They
mentally deteriorate, and those that were bad already
deteriorate faster. Their bodies, when already broken like the
one you looked in on was, can theoretically recover, but the
will to live often escapes and so they stop fighting even
subconsciously. For what it's worth, he won't be comfortable for
any of that," he explains.
At that point, he gets up and starts to lead her towards the
normally-closed ritual room. Well, he gets up and heads that way
and sort of seems to assume she'll follow him.
"I do have someone I've been talking to that can help, let's
say, encourage the process of people ending up in the hospital
that need to. It's where I have the best hold on things, and the
most people I know I can trust. I don't have the board of
directors in my pocket or anything," yet, "but it's not too
difficult for me to make sure any given patient ends up in the
care of me and mine. What Sleeps calls us the 'Final Slumber,'
and I've felt no need to change that name."
Rather, What Sleeps used it as a metaphor and he liked it as a
cool cult name. But he's largely telling the truth.
The ritual room itself seems like someone scoured an occult
store and just said 'sure, this will work' to just about
anything on display. It's largely improvised magic, but it's
improvised down to a science, wherein he's put intricate work
into finding out the actual properties of quartz or certain
incense. He also doesn't actually buy it from mall stores, he's
usually good about finding things at the source. There's also
some less mystical looking spots, like a mini lab area where he
has a microscope and other 'home science' equipment.

On a small table in there, a glass jar seems to have been smoked
along the sides and inlaid with the purified salt he'd gathered
from the ocean the other day. He's since re-boiled it a handful
of times and then mixed it with a glue-like substance he'd put
together to completely coat the interior of the jar and the
underside of the lid itself. On top of the lid, carvings of
symbols similar to what he uses for binding rites can be seen,
but better attuned to the nature of the soul than something like
a ghost.

This answer seems to satisfy her, as far as punishment is
concerned. She eagerly emanates that she would happily hunt down
abusers and encourage them toward the ER, where he and his could
do what they do.
She marvels at the ritual room, careful not to touch anything as
she walks in. For some reason this space strikes her as sacred,
and she inherently respects it.
This is, in her eyes, his lair. Where the real work is done.
She leans in and watches, curiously, as he heads toward whatever
it is he’s heading toward.

"I assumed you might. The orderly job is still good to give you
an excuse to be around, of course," he mentions. "Speaking of,
from what I've been told you're a shoe-in after a few doctored
bits on your application and answers. No pun intended," he adds
on.
He picks the jar up, tightening the lid. "This is ultimately
going to be what holds our abuser's soul. When I pass this one
along, I've heard tell that my patron has a gift for me. An
'amulet' of sorts, although I got the distinct feeling there's
more to it than that," he mentions.
"If you haven't had enough of the hospital for the evening, we
could go take care of it now. I know the night nurse who keeps
an eye on that wing of the hospital tonight," he offers.

She seems proud of herself for having made it through the
interview, whether or not it was a foregone conclusion. To her,
it was a challenge. Probably the most challenging part of the
job, if you don’t count having to speak to people.
She nods along as he describes the soul jar’s purpose.
When he suggests handling it now, she eagerly scampers back to
where she’d taken off her shoes and starts to put them on again.
She’s practically jumping on the hood of the car, rearing to go!

Gavin laughs a bit as she rushes off to get ready to go, almost
like a dog who's heard the word 'walk' or 'outside.' Not that
he'd say that out loud, though.
Jar in hand, he gets it wrapped up in a bag in another bag in a
padded bag in a bag, and slings that over his shoulder as he
heads to the car.
The drive is thankfully a short one (part of the appeal of this
condo), just long enough for him to send a text off into a
certain group chat. One he'll have to add Idi to once she has
the job.
"It shouldn't be too hard to lie low, just act like you're
supposed to be walking alongside me and nobody should question
it," he tells her as they pull into the employee parking area.
Twilight aside, she probably remembers the path pretty well,
emotional memories being what they are. Though coming in from
the back area is a little different until they get to the
stairs.
A blonde-haired man in pink scrubs motions them down the hall
upon seeing them, whispering something to the doctor, and an
orderly is up ahead watching the door they're heading towards.
"I suppose I should quickly introduce you. Idi, this is Anna,
she's another one of the orderlies who knows what's going on.
Anna, Idi is likely to be joining up with you soon," he says to
the tall raven-haired woman in that lighter shade of scrubs. Any
introductions have to be quick, though, all things considered,
so before too long they're ushered into the room.
Everything is... clearer, this time, obviously. Silent except
for the hum of the machinery, in a way that still seems emptier
than the blurred sounds Idi had been getting there. The man
himself, well, every bruise and bandage on him is that much
clearer, cleaner, that much more present and approachable (if
only literally).

She does as instructed: It’s not hard to act like she’s supposed
to be there. She is, in a way, supposed to be there; as an
orderly it’ll be her job soon. She was invited, anyways.
As introductions go, Anna gets a friendly wave. That’s all,
though, because there’s no time to sit and type on her phone.
She glares at the man in the bed, but makes no move to harm him.
As far as she knows, she’s just here to observe -- to see how
the doctor works his magic.

By reflex as much as anything, the doctor steps over and takes a
quick glance over the man's vitals. They're worse than before,
but he could still recover; at least, he could if little things
weren't being done to encourage otherwise.
"This ritual only works on those that are... weak. Dying. Either
literally actively bleeding to death, or that have so much wrong
with them that a lack of hospitalization would almost guarantee
a death sentence," he mentions to her. "Sometimes, even those
already injured need to be, let's say, mildly ignored," he
quietly adds.
In this case, though, their target seems plenty weak enough to
dislodge their soul.
The process seems simple enough. Moving up beside the man, he
places the bottom of the jar at a seemingly specific spot low on
his chest, and takes a deep breath. Gripping the top, his eyes
meet the man's closed ones, and he glares at him. It's not some
subtle thing, there's force to it; it's if looks could kill,
except the look is involving in soul-stealing instead.
He whispers something, a quick invocation to What Sleeps, and
then in a practiced movement at a specific rhythm, he undoes the
top of it. His grip tightens, and the man seems to seize for a
moment, a few quick beeps on the machines ignored by those
outside the room as the soul slips free. To mundane senses,
nothing happens, but any sort of ephemeral sight, including a
shapeshifter's awareness of the spirit, reveals the shimmering
substance almost spilling out from beneath the jar. It's like
it's dripping upward, flowing up the glass, and then suddenly
gravity reverses for it when it hits the rim and it all falls
in.
As soon as it's in place, the jar goes back on, much less
carefully than it was taken off; speed's what matters there.

--- End Quote ---
It's also harder than it looks; Gavin's body shudders and his
breath seizes as the jar seals up, and his hand is downright
shaking as he gets it put back into the collection of bags it
was brought in with.
