It takes a few days of being supported as a guest in the
Doctor’s apartment, but Idi finds her landlegs. She’s given a
phone, a loan, and before you know it she’s managed to transform
herself from bizarre naked lady in the ocean to
slightly-less-bizarre clothed lady in the city.
Hey, people get jobs they don’t deserve all the time, right?
There hasn’t been much opportunity for magic during this time of
preparation for the interview. Monthelm has to pull a few
strings, but the majority of the effort involves her brushing up
on her sign language, getting the phone to work, remembering
that phones are not waterproof -- that sort of thing.
But it all builds up to this moment:
She walks through the doors to the office, phone in hand and a
smile on her pretty face. Hopefully the interviewer doesn’t
recognize her photo from the wanted ad that was on the news a
few days ago; but that was from her highschool yearbook and is
several years old at this point. Plus she does her makeup and
hair differently now. So maybe she’ll luck out!

"Alexa?" the woman opens the door from her office about 5
minutes or so after the appointed time. Just late enough to be
notable but not so late as to be the sort of thing one can
complain about.
Once Idi responds, she motions for her to come inside, smiling
in that perfectly professional manner. It's a standard,
semi-cramped office that's comfortable enough for an interview
but hard to imagine having to sit there for 8 hours.
"Go ahead and make yourself comfortable. Do you need a glass of
water or anything?" she says a little too cheerfully, "Doctor
Monthelm passed a little information my way, but of course we
still need to go through and make sure you're a good fit with
us," she adds on in that way clearly meant to make her hopeful,
like it's all a formality.
The difference, of course, is that it ultimately is all a
formality, this time.
"Why don't we start off simple. You can tell me about yourself
and why you're interested in a job here," she says, pulling up
something on her computer screen.

Anxiety rides high in Idi for a moment -- she suddenly feels
like this is an audition, where she’ll be judged. The truth of
this question is that it’s answer is because I want money, and
you will give it to me if I work for you. But that’s not an
acceptable answer for this situation, now is it?

She swallows it and starts typing on her phone.
::The Doctor probably mentioned I have trouble speaking. I can
sign if you prefer! Just let me know.::
Then, in whichever method is most comfortable for the
interviewer -- sign language or text-to-speech -- she answers
the question.
::I figured if I was going to get a job, I should get one where
I’m helping in a way that matters - and *someone’s* gotta do the
work of an orderly. It’s not glorious, but it is important, and
I want to contribute how I can.::

"The phone is fine. Of course if you get hired and need someone
to help you with communication, we can accomodate that," she
assures her.
She nods at the answer, typing a few things up; she seems
pleased enough with it. The questions continue along those
lines, with bits of small-talk interspersed.
"What do you already know about Massachusetts General Hospital?"
"How would you describe your overall health and level of
fitness? Can you lift heavy things and assist with difficult
patients?"
"Are you good at handling conflict on the job? How do you
normally do so?"
"Are you open to getting some additional off-site training as
part of your onboarding?"
"How do you hope to direct your career after joining as an
orderly?"
She's cheerful and keeps things flowing, but towards the end of
it there's the slightest hint of concern on her face, and a
slight lag between one or two of the questions.

Being interviewed is a challenge she didn’t know she needed. It
tests skills she lacks:
Smalltalk between questions, and perfunctory communication in
answering them. It’s difficult for her not to be blatantly
honest in that really unhelpful sort of way; very direct. These
questions are just there to be there, and the answers only
matter if they’re unremarkable.
She barely manages, but she manages. Her nerves are wracked; it
doesn’t stop her, though. She tries her best and her best is
good enough.

Nancy seems pretty pleased with the answers, although she seems
to put that air off even on the few that Idi struggles with.
As it continues, though, Idi catches a reflection of something
in the computer screen. A room number, if she's been paying
attention to how they're set up, outlined by dimmed pixels that
match the sort of Sign a ghost or spirit could imprint on
something. For that second or two, Nancy also seems to freeze,
but when the image vanishes she continues along as if nothing
happened.
"Alright, I think that covers everything. Is there anything you
wanted to ask me about the position before we conclude things
here?" she asks.

Idi blinks.
And then realizes she’s been holding a breath. She exhales, and
quickly types.
::No questions, I don’t think. I hope to hear from you soon!::
she smiles as the voice on the phone reads out her thought.

She stands up and shakes Nancy’s hand, intent on investigating
this room further.
Once the door closes behind her on the interview office, she
looks one way, then the other, and heads off in the direction of
whatever hallway seems will take her in the direction of that
room.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t get there entirely unnoticed.
Someone, somehow, notices that she’s not where she should be.

Wrong Room
Like, really wrong
---------------------------------------------------------
It's not unheard of for other people to be moving through a
hospital, but you need to do a good job of blending in, looking
like you're a visitor already heading to the right room or a
patient that's not checked in or whatever else.
What one shouldn't do, though, is try to avoid someone looking
your way by stepping into an unknown closet, which Idi's
instincts misfired on.
She feels suddenly like the wind got knocked out of her, and
then she falls into a patient's room (and not the right one, for
that matter). The thing is, though, that that closet did NOT
have another door leading into that room.
Rather, Idi suddenly finds herself in a semi-solid state. If
she's ever been to the Shadow, it feels slightly like it does
when one crosses over there, but instead of shifting realm in
addition to spirit, she's stepped through but landed back where
she started. In Twilight.
Something seems to scurry away from her peripheral vision,
moving too quickly to properly lay eyes on in the time it takes
to get back up (assuming she does). Everything other than it,
though, looks faded, distant, like she's seeing it from far away
despite being right there. Sounds are muted as if through a
wall, taking effort to make it out, and she can't properly touch
anything. Even her feet planting on the floor doesn't feel
right, less like it's holding her up and more like they just
sort of cling to the solid surface.
Two things, though, seem normal, comparatively: the slithering,
gross movement of whatever's heading down the hall, and a gentle
humming coming from the other direction.

Poor idi has no idea what the fuck is happening. It leaves her
on edge -- very, very on edge. THE THINGS SHE DOES FOR WILLPOWER
She is left making a split-second decision: follow the
slithering thing, or follow the sound of the humming.
The instincts of a natural-born hunter kick in, and she stalks
after the slithering thing. It’s trying to get away, the humming
isn’t, and something in her body twitches as whatever it is
tries to escape: Like a cat pursuing a toy that slinks out of
sight.
Hazy, indistinct people crowd the hallway and it doesn’t take
her long to realize that she’s not seeing ghosts -- or at the
very least, she’s seeing ghosts that can’t see her. One of them
walks right through her as she steps out into the hallway, and
other than stopping for a moment afterward to look around in
mild confusion, they pass through her entirely unaware of her
presence.
Armed with this newfound confidence, she pursues her new prey.

As she moves forward, Idi is largely uncontested by the
inhabitants of the hallway, living, dead, or object alike, at
least from the physical world. As she slinks along, though, she
does finally catch sight of whatever it is that had moved away,
now slowing down as it thinks it lost her.
It's... a snake, almost, the size of a python but not the
man-eating variety. It's skeletal, though, with crackling bony
wings, all of which has a translucent filmy sort of 'body'
surrounding it.
Notably, it's heading in the direction of the room she's
supposed to be going to.
