There's a hesitant look as she approaches, and when she reaches
for his shirt, he gives her a strange sort of look at first.
"I..."
Well, she was trying to cover herself. Maybe it's just that.
He doesn't ultimately resist what she's doing, but he does
notice she's just sort of acting without talking. Once his shirt
is off, assuming she's not about to do something unexpected, he
clears his throat and pulls out his phone. "Can you not talk? Or
do you just lack social graces?" he asks her.
Either way, he sets the phone to a text to speech app and shows
that to her as if to offer to bridge that gap. It's his work
phone, it's fine.

Once she’s got it, she puts the shirt on. It’s just long enough
to cover her up, even if she’s still barefoot in the freezing
cold that is Christmas Eve in Boston. She doesn’t seem to mind
too much. He, on the other hand, now has to deal with
technically-not-freezing temperatures without his shirt.
She takes his phone and her thumbs type furiously for a moment.
::Don’t you watch the news? It’s dangerous by the water. Are you
okay?::
It would appear that she both cannot speak, and lacks social
graces.
At least she’s concerned for his well-being, instead of lacking
social graces and being a complete fuck about it.

He, of course, had a jacket that he puts back on, which is still
less effective without the shirt, but it could be worse.
"I hadn't known the problem was that widespread," he responds,
glancing to the crushed creature for a moment. "And I needed to
prepare some sea salt. Magical reasons, I can't just buy it at
the store," he adds, motioning to the pan that by now is nearly
boiled out and left with a salty residue. Before that burns, he
does lean over to switch that off.
He does, though, lean over towards the creature and pluck a few
key samples from it with a scalpel (yes he keeps one with him),
like eyes and whatever he can get of its arm bits, and puts them
into the jar. He'll just have to keep the salt coated on the pan
for now.
"So were you already looking into these things or did I just get
lucky you happened to be... swimming by?" he asks. While clearly
still shaken by everything, he doesn't seem to have the 'oh my
god tentacled sea-women exist' surprise to him.

other night. I don’t know anything about them other than they
come from further out in the ocean, and they eat people. I’ve
only ever seen two of them.::
She watches as he takes his samples, wincing a little as he
slices a part of it’s compound eye for his evidence collection.
Then it dawns on her: He said he practices magic. And he’s
already not shocked that tentacled sea women exist.
She lights up and furiously types again.
::I’ve never met anyone else who does magic. I know a little bit
too. Haven’t done any since I changed, though. Can’t talk
anymore.::

Beautiful, tentacled, and can do magic. The trifecta.
"I'll have to see what I can learn about them from this,"
tapping at the jar, which he seals up and puts in his bag. He
makes sure the pan has cooled down before carefully lodging it
there too in a way that won't just make all the caked salt
dislodge, "And avoid further beach walks for the time being."
He should have what he needs for his next 'offering,' though.
"There are many forms of magic that don't rely on one's voice,
though I'm not sure what you can do," he says. Considering for a
moment, he glances in the vague direction he hears the ghost,
then back to her. "I'm what some call a Conjurer, or Binder. A
Warlock if they're too keyed into popular media," he explains
somewhat dryly.

She shakes her head.
Right. She doesn’t need to hide herself from him. That
means she can use her telepathy. It’s much easier for her
to use her mind to communicate, even if she hasn’t had
much practice since her First Change.
Monthelm would simply, and suddenly, understand that she could
summon things from beyond The Veil, including but not limited to
the dead. There’s a feeling of excitement at discovering
someone to talk to.
He would then know that she’s been afloat, lost at sea,
for about a month. Living as an animal, hunting and swimming and
not having a place in the human’s world any more.
Her telepathy isn’t typical; it’s a shared knowledge
rather than directly ‘spoken.’ Her thoughts
aren’t narrative or legible so much as they are a
coalescence of ideas.

The sudden mental imagery clearly surprises him, his brow
furrowing and a look of confusion on his face before his
conscious mind catches up with the rush of images.

"So... you changed about a month ago then?" he asks, apparently
not quite willing to immediately attempt to respond
telepathically, even if that would work. "I've been working with
another shapeshifter, but they're a bear. Still working out some
details with them," he mentions, "An octopus one is new to me,
though. I suppose that makes some sense, though, given
mythology, a summoner within the deep," he muses aloud.
Refocusing on the concept, he manages a smile to her, "The point
being, you're far from the first shapechanger to end up finding
a way to reintegrate into society. I could potentially help with
that. I do owe you," he offers. "To start with, I have an extra
room at my home, if you'd like to try sleeping on dry land. I'm
not sure how appealing or not that is to you."
"As for your magic, my focus is on the dead as well, and the
stranger things attached to the Underworld. So maybe I can help
you figure that back out..."

She nods at his question about when she changed. There’d be a
quick succession of images, the sinking of a yacht -- blood. A
drug-addled haze. Seeing red. A feeling of panic devolving into
a defensive rage.
To contrast that horrible experience, he’d feel elation at the
idea of a place to stay. Re-integrating to society. A deep,
powerful curiosity at the idea of working magic together.
And then he’d be suddenly aware of how cold it was. She’s
shivering. His shirt affords her some decency, but that’s just
about it.

Gavin frowns slightly at that point. He had probably just
assumed that as an ocean creature the frigid temperature meant
little to her, but he can just about feel how that's not the
case.
"Why don't we head back to my car? Here, carry this," he says,
reaching down to carefully pick up the portable bunsen burner
and hand it to her. It's off but radiates a decent bit of heat
still. Something, at least, until they get to the heated
vehicle.
"We can talk magic once you've stopped shivering."

She holds the burner close and follows him to his car. It
doesn’t take long to heat up.
Gratitude is the next thing to wade through his consciousness.
She hands him the burner, not knowing where it’s supposed to go
-- before the questions start popping into his mind, a torrent
of curiosity and excitement bubbling up from behind a dam that
usually keeps those things hidden.
Are there others who practice? Does he need any assistance? What
sort of experience does he have? What could she do in place of
using her voice? What’s the salt for?
And then, interrupting the flow of thoughts begging for answers,
it dawns on him that they’ve just left the crushed carcass of
the predator out for anyone to find. It will need to be disposed
of before they leave the beach.
